Faculty Advisement Options

Some of the functions below are continuations of existing programs; others are completely new. In both cases, though, we anticipate changes, and thus the following descriptions are composed in very general terms.

  • Group (a.k.a. Pod) Mentor (10 hrs. minimum per semester, for both semesters)
An annual commitment in which you mentor a group of students. The basis of the group or Pod will in most cases be an academic major or degree program, but we are hoping to develop these for first-year students as well. Can be done online, on campus, or a combination of bothdetails to follow on this. We are also hoping those who choose this option will continue with it so that students who sign on can stay with you during their time at Bergen. While mentors will be expected to meet with individual students who request it, mentors should attempt, as much as feasible, to create community and make the mentoring activity a group activity. We are currently working on a sign-up system for students that will allow for students to be efficiently removed and added to your group.

  • Degree Program Group Advising Sessions
Involves hosting an advisement open house at key junctures during year, where all majors are invited to attend, and most of or the entire faculty attend. Ideal for programs with a high student to faculty ratios; INF has used this approach in the past with success.

  • Degree Program Admissions Advising
Advising students on a walk-in basis who are interested in enrolling in a particular program. The health professions do a great deal of this. Can be done in ones office.

  • Developmental Placement/Registration Advising
Working with new and returning (between level) students in developmental MAT and EBS courses. Also includes ALP. Assistance with interpreting test scores and registering for classes.

  • Majors Fair(4 hrs./sem.)
Represent your degree option or career program. Includes development and execution.

  • Admissions Open House(4 hrs./sem.)

  • Advisement Center(walk-in)
Advise walk-in students in your general area of expertise (liberal arts, natural sciences, etc.)

  • Online advisement through aacenter@bergen.edu link.
Respond to email inquiries and possibly monitor chat sessions.
