Getting a Free Email Account

Bergen Community College requires students enrolled in credit courses have a valid email address on file with the college.  Students may enter a preferred email address that will be associated with a student file by using WebAdvisor (http://go.bergen.edu ).

Students are encouraged to obtain an email account from any existing email provider.  Although Bergen Community College no longer hosts student email accounts, access to web based email providers is available through any internet capable college computer or through the college wireless network.  Students are encouraged to evaluate the most current offerings from the many free email providers or their existing Internet Service Provider (ISP).  Below is a summary of some of the most commonly used email providers.  Please note that we do not specifically endorse any of the following email services:

Google Gmail (gmail.google.com) Gmail’s email service offers 2GB (2000MB) of storage and increases this as the account ages.

Hotmail (www.hotmail.com ) Owned and operated by Microsoft, Hotmail offers a storage capacity of 1GB (1000MB) and any single attachment can be as large as 10MB.

AOL Mail (www.aol.com) Originally Netscape WebMail, but now owned by America Online, AOL Mail offers a storage capacity of 2GB (2000MB). Current users of America Online or AOL Instant Messenger can share the user name tied to AOL screen names.

Yahoo! Mail (mail.yahoo.com ) Yahoo’s free email service offers space allocation of 1GB (1000MB) and any single attachment can be as large as 10MB.

Please note this is not a comprehensive list of available email providers and space allocations may have changed since the time of writing.  There are a number of resources on the web that offer more detailed comparisons (including Wikipedia’s Comparison of webmail providers).

Using a Flash Drive

Plug the flash drive in the USB port on the side of the monitor.  Most flash drives have a protective cover you need to remove to access the plug.  The plug only goes in one direction, with the white or black squares facing you. (the other side has empty square holes or no holes).

  1. The computer will usually emit a beep at this time, telling you that a new device is installed.
  2. Now you can save anything you need to Drive letter E:,(AD-STICK on the screen) which is the flash drive.  In the Save as dialog of the software you are using, you can left click on the arrow next to the directory listing and you will see the E: drive to left click on as a destination. Click on OK to save to the flash drive.
