PARAMUS, N.J. – Four Bergen Community College faculty, staff and students have received awards from Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international honor society of two-year schools.

At the group’s Nerd Nation annual convention this week in Orlando, Fla., student Laura Deluca, of Bogota, will accept the 2014 Distinguished Chapter Member Award – an honor earned by only 30 students – for her commitment to PTK hallmarks: scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship. Deluca also ranks among the 37 students selected to the New Jersey All-State Academic Team sponsored by the Coca-Cola Foundation, the New Jersey Education Association and PTK. Fellow Bergen student Angie Goldszmidt, of Cresskill, joins her on the team. Both will travel to Trenton May 1 for the 20th annual Phi Theta Kappa Day celebration hosted by the New Jersey Council of County Colleges at the Lafayette Yard Hotel.

Meanwhile, and also at the Nerd Nation conference, Professor Win Win Kyi, of Hackensack, will accept the 2014 Distinguished Advisor Award and Dean of Student Life and Judicial Affairs Nestor Melendez, of Fort Lee, will accept the 2014 Distinguished College Administrator Award.

Bergen PTK members must maintain high GPAs (above 3.65) and contribute to service learning projects.

The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, remains the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses throughout the world. Nearly three million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 131,000 students inducted annually.

Bergen Community College (www.bergen.edu) based in Paramus is a public two-year coeducational college, enrolling nearly 17,000 students at locations in Paramus, the Philip J. Ciarco Jr. Learning Center in Hackensack and Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands in Lyndhurst. The College offers associate degree, certificate and continuing education programs in a variety of fields.
