Radiography Program Admissions Policy

Introduction

Before applying to the radiography program either as a change of curriculum student or direct application student, you are required to seek advisement from the radiography faculty. This may be accomplished by electronic advisement using the email address radiographyad@bergen.edu or attending a Health Professions Information Session. The dates for the Information Sessions are posted on the Health Professions main page under the heading "Click here for Health Professions Information Sessions". Proof of advisement is required before applying to the program. The rationale is that you have been sufficiently educated on the program, its requirements, expectations and your readiness for success in the program.

Radiography Program Admissions Process

Admission to the radiography program is a five-step process.Prospective students are encouraged to carefully read the following requirements to ensure a complete application.

Step One:  Application to the Radiography Program

Students may apply to Health Professions/Radiography using one of the following:

1.If you are a degree seeking student in another program at Bergen Community College, you may apply on- line using the change of curriculum form.

2.Complete a Direct Application. Use this form if you’re a first-time student here at Bergen Community  College; or (b) a non-degree seeking student. You may use the online form.

The program recommends that you contact Ms. Elsa Valcarcel in the Admissions Department for assistance. She may be reached at evalcarcel@bergen.edu. Make sure that all applications are complete. Incomplete applications will not be considered. All applications MUST be received by February 1st.

Step Two:  Take the College Basic Skills Test (Math/ English)

This is a requirement for all incoming students who wish to apply to any college program. Students who are placed into basic mathematics and algebra are advised that it may take two (2) years to complete their requirements before being considered for admissions to the Radiography Program - One year for their remedial courses and one year for their college-level courses. This test is given in the Testing Center S-127.

A score of 530 or above on the Math SAT will waive the math portion of the basic skills test. A score of 540 or above on the Critical Reading SAT will waive the English portion of the basic skills test.

Step Three:  Completion of the Prerequisites Courses

High School Requirements:

1.  High school college preparatory (CP) biology with a laboratory
2.  Algebra II
3.  The program expects you to earn a B+ grade or higher.

College Requirements:

If you have not taken these courses in high school, you must take:

1.  BIO 109 Anatomy & Physiology I

2.  Complete a remedial mathematics and English course at BCC and earn the same grades.

Step Four:  Criminal Background History Check

After completing the first three steps of the admissions process and it is determined that you meet the admissions criteria, the Dean of Health Professions will have a letter sent to you regarding completion of the Criminal History Background Check (CHBC). The letter will provide you the information needed to complete the process electronically. This check must be completed within five days of receipt of the letter. It is imperative that candidates understand that the CHBC is arequirement of the accreditation agency of our clinical education centers and not of Bergen Community College. The applicant is to read and follow the Division of Health Professions policy for criminal history background checks, most especially since the outcome of this report affects admissions into this program. The cost for the background check is $70.00.

Step Five: Radiography Admissions Examination

When all prerequisite courses are successfully completed and a minimal GPA of 2.5 is attained, and a clear background check is received, the applicant will be invited to take the Radiography Admissions Examination. You will then receive a letter inviting you to take the admissions examination. This letter will also provide the informationneededto register forthe examination. This exam is given by an outside testing agency. If you have any questions, you may contact Prof. J. Mamatz by phone at 201-493-5000 or by electronic mail at: radiographyad@bergen.edu
