Written over two millennia ago, Sophocles presents the moral arguments of all democracies confronted with an unjust law through one of the most resolute female characters in all of dramatic literature Antigone, whose unwavering dedication to principle makes her a symbol of individual rights throughout the world.

In this classic tragedy, Antigone is an enduring statement of the conflict that exists between the need for social order and the knowledge that there are times when a higher, moral authority must supercede human law.

Pro Arte Chorale ~Songs of AmericaPro Arte Chorale

Celebrating its 42nd Season, the Pro Arte Chorale has appeared at Carnegie Hall, LincolnCenter, and regularly at NJPAC, most recently performing Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Nights Dream.

The classic compelling drama, written by Nick Joaquin, Filipino National Artist for Literature, will be performed by the STU Graduate School Academic Theatre. Set in the Spanish city of Intramuros “the old Manila” just before WW II,Portrait explores the ever-pervading search for the Filipino identity by telling the tragic story of two spinster sisters who stubbornly try to cling to the genteel and impractical world of their Hispanized culture as they are slowly being devoured by new commercialism and pragmatism under the American regime. Aptly named to reflect the contrasting timbres of their instruments - which include clarinet, violin, cello and piano - as well as the variety of their music, the Contrasts Quartet, is widely acclaimed for their exhilarating performances of old and new repertoire. The ensemble of four extraordinary women virtuosi performs a mix of duos, trios, and quartets with innovative programming that appeals to a broad range of audience members. Contrasts has performed across the and Europe and appeared on WNYC radio and the syndicated live classical music show St. Paul Sunday. Their second CD, featuring the works of Ned Rorem is due for release in Fall 2005.

Three world-class artists - clarinetist Murray Colosimo, pianist Peggy DeArmond, and violinist Vladmir Tsypin - will combine forces to perform an array of musical works from the Classics to Ragtime, featuring Bartok’s 20th century masterpiece “Contrasts” as well as works by Scott Joplin, and others. Clarinetist and conductor Murray Colosimo, who has performed as a soloist and in chamber ensembles, is also music educator and recording artist. Pianist Peggy DeArmond - an active soloist, guest artist and accompanist - has served as keyboardist for the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra for 18 years. A native of the Soviet Union, Violinist Vladmir Tsypin won many prestigious wards including the Tchaikovsky National Competition, before joining the New York Philharmonic in 1983. Don’t miss this exceptional and unusual afternoon of music.
