Suicide

Suicide is the leading cause of death among college students; 18 adolescents kill themselves every day . For every suicide, an additional 2 or 3 "accidental" deaths are actually suicides. For every completed suicide, there are 50 - 250 attempts. 80% of completed suicides have given warning signs.

Warning Signs!

  • 1. Suicide threat, plan, or preparation, or thoughts (verbal or written).
  • 2. Prior suicide attempt(S).
  • 3. Self-destructive and risky behavior.
  • 4. Family history of suicide attempt, completed suicide.
  • 5. Alcohol or drug use.
  • 6. Emotional neglect, social isolation, lack of support at home.
  • 7. Deterioration in relationships, work, school performance.
  • 8. Undiagnosed, untreated mood disorder (major depression, bi-polar disorder, dysthymia).
  • 9. Lack of supportive, appropriate role models.
  • 10. Gives away belongings, valuable or personal treasures.

Risk Factors:

  • 1. Disappointments, fear, rejection (victim of bullying).
  • 2. Recent example of a suicide.
  • 3. Impending, distressing change.
  • 4. Access to weapons.
  • 5. Feelings of hopelessness, detachment, isolation, victimization.
  • 6. Loss ability to have fun.
  • 7. Sleeping/or eating difficulties or changes.
  • 8. Domestic violence

What to do: If you, or someone you know is feeling suicidal or expressing any of the above signs and symptoms, call your county's crisis intervention hot line. In Bergen County, the number is 201-262-HELP.
