Depression

You or someone you care about may suffer from depression if you notice the following symptoms:
  1. Persistent sad, anxious or “empty” mood.
  2. Tearfulness (or irritability if 19 or younger).
  3. Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism. (“What’s the use… it will never get better…”).
  4. Avoidant behavior such as isolation, or excessive shopping, gambling, video/computer activities, drug or alcohol use.
  5. Low self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness, helplessness, guilt.
  6. Low energy or fatigue.
  7. Difficulty with concentration, recall and/or making decisions.
  8. Insomnia, or early morning awakening, or sleeping too much.
  9. Poor appetite or overeating.
  10. Diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities including sex, and hobbies.
  11. Restlessness, irritability, agitation.
  12. Persistent physical symptoms such as chronic pain, headaches, digestive disorders that do not respond to medical treatment.

If untreated, severe, or on-going depression can lead to suicide. Look for the following additional warnings:

  1. Thoughts of death or dying, suicide.
  2. Expressions of suicidal thoughts, plans, gestures.
  3. A recent significant loss, crisis or trauma.
  4. Desire to give away favorite items.
  5. Previous attempts or gestures.

If you suspect suicide IMMEDIATELY call 201-262-HELP for crisis intervention. There is no need to suffer with depression. It is a treatable condition.
