Bergen Community College Foundation administers several funds and endowments that provide annual graduation and scholarship awards for BCC students. All full and part-time students are encouraged to apply for these awards regardless of financial aid status.Each award has a separate set of qualifying criteria so, in most cases, you may qualify for one or more awards.

 

Graduation Awards

The following graduation awards each have a monetary amount attached. The monetary amounts canrange up to $1,000 annually.

FALL/SPRING 2012-2013 SCHOLARSHIPS

These scholarship awards carry monetary amounts, most rangingfrom $500 to$2,500 per year, but with some even larger.

SPECIALLY SELECTED AWARDS
The followingawards, which are given out annually, havealternate selection criteria, processes and committees. These specially selected awards each have a monetary amount attached and that amount ranges up to $1,000 per year.

GRADUATION AWARDS:
The following graduation awards each have a monetary amount attached. The monetary amounts canrange up to $1,000 annually.

Irish Heritage
Thomas J. Landers Irish Cultural Award
Provides an annual award to be presented to the graduating BCC student who has written the winning essay on “The Meaning of My Irish Heritage in My Life.”
 
The David and Gertrude Schwimmer Endowed Scholarship Fund
Provides an annual award for a graduating BCC student who has done outstanding work in the area of liberal arts and who plans to do further work leading to a contribution in society. The recipient must have a 3.5 or greater cumulative GPA, a minimum of 30 credits in the Humanities: English, Foreign Language, History, Philosophy, and the Arts with an average of 3.5 or greater GPA in this concentration.
 
Dr. Eric Lubot Memorial Graduation Award
Provides an annual award for a graduating student who has exhibited the most substantial work in mathematics while at Bergen Community College.
 
Outstanding PTK Representative
Professor Robert A. Saldarini Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship Award

Provides an annual award to be given out each Spring to the student nominated to represent the BCC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at the Middle States competition in the Outstanding Student category.
 
Gay/Lesbian
Gay/Lesbian Excellence Award
Provides an annual award for a graduating gay/lesbian student who has demonstrated leadership in a college and/or community activity (not necessarily gay/lesbian oriented activities). Student must provide a letter of recommendation substantiating their leadership in the above plus submit an essay (500-700 words) regarding their involvement/leadership.
 

Peter S. Snell Endowed Scholarship
Provides an annual award for a student graduating with an AAS in Horticulture degree who has maintained a minimum GPA of 3.0 and has demonstrated financial need.

Valedictorian Award
President Judith K. Winn Valedictorian Graduation Award
Named in honor of Judith K. Winn, the 4th President of Bergen Community College, this fund will provide an annual award of $1,000 for that year’s Valedictorian.

Skyler Bodek Polish Culture Award
Skyler Bodek Polish Culture Award
Named in memory of Skyler Bodek, the Polish Cultural Award committee will solicit applications and essays entitled, "The Meaning ofPolish Heritage inMy Life." The $100 award and certificate will be made each May to a graduating student of Polish heritage.

FALL/SPRING2009-2010 SCHOLARSHIPS:

These scholarship awards carry monetary amounts, most rangingfrom $500 to $2,500 per year, but with some even larger.
 
BCC General Scholarship Fund
Provides awards for students who have a demonstrated financial need.
David and May Bogen Fund
Provides an award for a deserving student carrying a minimum of 12 credits with a GPA of 3.0 or greater.
Dr. Sidney Silverman Scholarship
Provides annual, unrestricted scholarship awards for full- and/or part-time students not eligible for federal or state financial aid.
Ciarco Family Foundation Endowed Scholarship
Provides awards for deserving, current BCC students exhibiting a financial need and a GPA of 3.0 or greater
The Rink Scholarship
Provides an annual award for a deserving student exhibiting financial need.
Alumni Network Scholarship Fund
Annual scholarship awards for full- or part-time deserving students with a minimum of fifteen (15) earned credits at BCC and a GPA of 2.7 or greater.
Kenneth Edelson Endowed Scholarship
This fund, which is named in memory of longtime Bergen Community College Foundation Board, member, Kenneth Edelson, provides an award for a deserving, focused student with a GPA of 3.0 or more and exhibiting a financial need.
Khym Foundation Scholarship
After achieving substantial success as a Korean-American apparel entrepreneur, Mr. David Khym, founder of Southpole and Wicked Fashions, Inc., formed the Khym Foundation in 2004 as a means by which he could give back to the local communities that helped to drive his achievements. The Khym Foundation, a New Jersey-based charitable institution, provides awards for full-time BCC students exhibiting sound academic standing, a GPA of 3.0 or more, and exhibiting financial need.
MDK Development Scholarship Fund
Provides an award for a focused, full- or part-time student with a GPA of 3.0 or more and exhibiting a financial need.
Winifred M. and George P. Pitkin Foundation Scholarship
Provides an award for a Bergen Community College student exhibiting academic excellence and a financial need.

Moses Family Scholarship
Provides an annual award for a BCC student carrying a minimum of nine credits each semester. The student must have completed two semesters at BCC with a minimum of 18 credits, a GPA or 3.8 or greater and demonstrates a financial need.
Dearheart Foundation Endowed Scholarship
Provides an award for a working compassionate, kind woman that is a focused student, exhibits financial need and maintains a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Stephen Gold Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship has been established to perpetuate the memory of Stephen Gold who passed away on September 10, 1996. Stephen was born with a form of Muscular Dystrophy that had severe respiratory complications and prevented him from walking. However limiting these physical conditions were, his spirit and zest for life were always extremely positive. Stephen’s tremendous academic success in school was a testament to his determination to not let his disability be the overriding factor in his life. His life exemplified high ideals, and his actions set an example for others to follow. Stephen’s insights and attitudes were an inspiration to all who had the opportunity to meet him.

This scholarship is intended to commemorate the traits that defined Stephen’s life. He had a great moral character, integrity, and was constantly striving for academic excellence. This scholarship is to be given to a academically deserving student who has completed English Basic Skills and whose goals are to make this a better world to live in.
 

Hospitality/Culinary Arts
Arthur and Cecilia Tolve Hospitality/Culinary Arts Scholarship
Provides one or more annual awards for students who are matriculated in a Hospitality or Culinary Arts program, have successfully completed at least six (6) college credits in their major, with a GPA of 3.0 or greater, and exhibiting a financial need.

Nick Anagnostakos Endowed Nursing Scholarship Fund
Provides an annual award for a nursing student exhibiting excellent academic achievement and financial need.
Dorothy P. Romaine Evening Nursing Scholarship
This award will be given to a duly enrolled evening nursing student with a demonstrated financial need who has completed sixteen (16) credits in their program with a 3.0 or greater G.P.A. In addition, the recipient will be an independent and critical thinker who has demonstrated maturity.
Denise Roswell Nursing Scholarship
Provides an award for a female nursing student with one or more children who has returned to college to complete her degree; maintains a GPA of 3.0 or more; has completed one half of the nursing program, has a financial need and exhibits clinical experience as documented by her instructors.
William M.Orr EndowedScholarship
Provides annual scholarship awards for students who have completed at least one semester in the nursing program, have demonstrated good clinical skills, have a GPA of 3.0 or greater, exhibit the characteristics or an independent and critical thinker and demonstrate a maturity.
Maura Soehnlein Memorial Scholarship
Provides an annual scholarship award, preferably for a parent with a demonstrated financial need, who has completed at least one semester in the nursing program with good grades, has demonstrated good clinical skills, has a GPA of 3.0 or greater, and is a warm, caring, loving person who wants to help others.
Dr. Audrey Stephan Endowed Nursing Scholarship
This fund, named in memory of longtimenursing faculty member, Dr. Audrey Stephan, provides an award for an evening nursing student exhibiting financial need, dedication to the field of nursing and a GPA of 2.75 or greater.
Theresa Romano Nursing Scholarship
Provides an award for a full- or part-time nursing student (although the award may be offered to a student in one of the Allied Health programs) who has completed one full semester, has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater, and is not on financial aid but exhibits financial need.

Ellen Fressola Scholarship for Nursing
Provides an annual award for a student who has completed two semesters in the nursing program, is a single parent (male or female) and has a GPA or 3.5 or greater.
Marian "Mona" Dolecki Endowed Scholarship Fund
Provides an annual scholarship award for a nursing student who has completed Nursing II and has a financial need.

Part Time Students

Skyler Bodek Textbook Fund
The Skyler Bodek Textbook Fund has been developed to assist part-time students with dependents not receiving financial aid.

Adam Feigenbaum Award of Merit
This award is presented to one or more students attending Bergen Community College in recognition of their meritorious academic efforts.
 
Asian-American Scholarship
Provides a scholarship for an Asian-American woman who is Korean and attending Bergen Community College with at least six credits completed and a minimum GPA of 3.0 or greater.
 
Michael J. Esposito Trust Fund
Provides one or more annual awards for tuition for students who are matriculated in a Speech, Theatre or Performing Arts program, have successfully completed at least twelve (12) college credits with a GPA of 2.5 or greater, and have completed at least two courses in their major.
 
Ethel Burns Endowed Scholarship for the Blind and Visually Impaired Provides an annual award for a blind or visually impaired student in need of assistance.
 

SunGard Collegis One-Year Scholarship
Provides a one-year award for a student majoring in Computer Science or Information Systems who has completed a minimum of 15 credits and has a GPA of 3.0 or higher. After the student has used the scholarship for one semester, Collegis would offer that student an internship in the OIT department.

Broadcasting

The Barbara Walters Scholarship
The Barbara Walters Scholarship will be given in the 2009-10 fiscal year with funds from the Project Literacy Scholarship Fund. The student receiving the Barbara Walters Scholarship should demonstrate the following:
- Exceptional potential in the area of broadcasting or other public media.
- A minimum grade point average of 3.0.
- Outstanding character evidenced by overcoming obstacles with hard work and determination.


Business

Greater CommunityBank Scholarship Fund
Provides an award for a full- or part-time student with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who is majoring in business, economics or finance and exhibiting a financial need.
A. M. (Bud) D’Alessandro Endowed Memorial Scholarship
This fund, named in memory of longtime BCC Board of Trustees member, Bud D’Alessandro, provides an annual award for a resident of Bergen County attending BCC who plans to major in business.
Joseph A. Martucci Award
This award is named in memory of longtime faculty member, Joseph Martucci. The selected recipient must be a Bergen Community College student who is studying accounting or business management and has a need and willingness to learn.
Ethel Pelletiere Scholarship
Provides an annual award for a woman with children who is returning to or just entering college, is majoring in accounting, and has a GPA or 3.0 or greater.
Traphagen Family Scholarship
Provides an award for a student enrolled in the accounting or business curriculum and has a GPA of 3.0 or greater
 
Delta Dental Foundation Scholarship Fund
Provides six (6) annual awards for students exhibiting financial need (as demonstrated through the Student Aid Report from the U.S. Department of Education) who have completed at least the first semester of their program in dentalhygiene and maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
 
William Fordham Memorial Scholarship in Criminal Justice
Provides an annual award for a student seeking a degree in Criminal Justice. Recipients must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or more; be an in-county resident enrolled full-time and not currently employed by a police department.

Literacy
The Project Literacy Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund was established by Project Literacy of Bergen County, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the level of public consciousness on the issue of adult literacy. Funds for this scholarship are donated from the profits of “Authors for Literacy,” a speakers series sponsored by Project Literacy and Bergen Community College, as well as contributions from Bergen County businesses and individuals.Students receiving an award from the Project Literacy Scholarship Fund should demonstrate the following:
  • Personal achievement in literacy through attainment of a GED or English language skills
  • A need for financial assistance but not currently receiving financial aid
  • Enrollment as a full or part-time student
ESL or GED Graduate
William F. Coggie Endowed Scholarship Fund
This scholarship, named in memory of longtime Associate Dean of Students and Professor in the Student Services Division, provides an award for a male student who has successfully completed his GED or ESL requirements at the Ciarco Learning Center and has been accepted in a certificate or degree program at Bergen. This application should be accompanied by a typewritten biographical essay (no more than 500 words) that includes the student’s educational goals.
 
Hispanic Institute Scholarship
Annual award for a full-time student, Hispanic by birth or heritage, and a GPA of an equivalent to a “B” or 3.0 for the previous year in college or high school.
Franco-Miranda Latino Excellence Scholarship
Provides an annual award towards tuition, fees and/or books. The recipient must be a full time student who has completed at least one semester of non-remedial, college level coursework with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The student must demonstrate active participation in any student organization.
 
Dr. Richard D. Ciccone Scholarship and Endowment Fund
Provides annual scholarships for students of Italian heritage with a GPA or 3.0 or greater.

Students of Indian Descent
Indian-Americans of Paramus, Inc. Scholarship
Provides annual awards for students attending BCC who are of Indian descent; exhibiting economic need; actively involved in community service and demonstrating academic excellence.
 
Leo Foundation Restricted Scholarship
Provides an annual award for a single parent with small children who have a desire to continue their education at a 4-year institution, have a GPA of 3.0 or greater and exhibit a financial need.
Steven D. Olensky Memorial Fund
Provides a scholarship for a single parent raising small chldren in the home while taking courses at BCC, carrying a minimum GPA of 3.0 and exhibiting financial need.
 
Dr. Seymour Lewis Endowed Memorial Scholarship
Provides an annual award for a student with exceptional abilities and limited resources with a concentration in the Biological Sciences.
 
Catherine Quinn Ryan Scholarship
Provides an annual award for a focused full-time student in the field of healthcare with a GPA or 3.0 or greater and exhibiting financial need.
 
Jacob “Jack” Fisher Horticulture Award
Provides annual awards for students who have completed 15 credits in the field of horticulture and are working toward an A.A.S. degree or a certificate program, have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the program and have maintained a GPA of 3.0 or greater.

PSE&G Scholarship
Provides an annual award for a deserving student studying math, science or technology with a desire to have a career in business using these skills upon graduation.
Helen and Walter Fitzpatrick BioScience Scholarship
Provides awards for one or more students, who have successfully completed a minimum of 8 creditsfor ascience major at BCC, have a GPA of 3.0 orgreater and are pursuing a degree in BioScience. Student must exhibit financial need.
Verizon Scholarship
Provides an annual award for a student studying in the technical field exhibiting finanical need and academic excellence with a 3.5 or higher GPA.
 
RAS Technology Mentor Service Award
This award, which will be determined by a panel of judges, will be given to one or more student mentors selected based on service provided through the Tutoring Center in one or more of the listed and related technology courses.
 
Stryker Scholarship
Provides one or more annual awards for students studying Manufacturing Technology either full- or part-time, with at least one award per year being awarded to a woman or a minority student; applicants must have completed at least 6 credit hours at BCC and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 for consideration.
 
Edreth Videtti Scholarship Fund
Provides an annual scholarship award for a student in the paramedical programs.
 
Health Science/Sciences/Social Work/Psychology
Harold Winn Memorial Scholarship

Provides an annual award for a student in pursuit of a career in the sciences, health sciences, social work or psychology, has a GPA of 3.0 or greater and demonstrating a financial need.
 
Paul Marshall Music Scholarship
Provides an award for a serious music student attending CC with a commitment to full- or part-time study with Minimum of 9 credits a semester, a GPA of 3.0 or greater and exhibiting a financial need
Louis Girshon Memorial Scholarship
Provides an annual scholarship for a deserving student in need who has emigrated from another country to Bergen County and is currently a resident alien or new U. S. citizen. The recipient must have successfully completed a minimum of 6 credit hours at Bergen Community College; have a GPA of 3.0 or greater; be duly enrolled on a full- or part-time basis; exhibit financial need; and have established goals for his or her future.
Barton and Foote Book Scholarship
A scholarship will be awarded to a funded or non-funded student enrolled in the Educational Opportunity Fund Program at Bergen Community College. The student must have an overall GPA of 3.00 or greater and must have completed a minimum of 15 college level credits. The student must major in Psychology, Social Work or Liberal Arts General with an interest in pursuing a career in Counseling or Education. The scholarship will cover the cost of books and supplies at the Bergen Community College bookstore up to the amount of the scholarship. One scholarship will be awarded and paid directly to the Bergen Community College bookstore. Scholarship may be rolled over to the following semester if entire amount is not spent in the previous semester.
 

SPECIALLY SELECTED AWARDS:

The following awards, which are given out annually, have alternate selection criteria, processes and committees. These specially selected awards each have a monetary amount attached and that amount ranges up to $1,000 per year.

Jorge Blanco Memorial Scholarship
Jorge Blanco, a native of Columbia, South America, was a student at Bergen Community College in 1972. In 1984, he used the knowledge gained in his courses at BCC and his extensive skills in design and engineering to establish his own engineering firm. In 1998, Mr. Blanco died of sudden heart attack. The annual awards from this fund, which was established by family, colleagues and friends of Mr. Blanco, will ensure a fitting legacy for this special man. This award is given to a matriculated minority, full or part-time student, in their second year of student with a GPA of 3.0 or greater.

Wilton T. Barney Memorial Scholarship Fund
Provides annual awards for graduating high school students who have demonstrated school and community involvement beyond a high school requirement in civic, social or other volunteer work within the community; is a Bergen County resident; minimum 2.8 GPA; is a Bergen County high school graduate who is entering Bergen Community College as a first-time full-time degree seeking student carrying a minimum high school GPA.
John Zawryt Educational Service Award
Provides an annual award to a deserving student who best demonstrates service in regards to the education of others or to a school itself. It does not have to be the most hours spent, but who has been the best role model. Participation or better yet, leading and organizing activities providing services to improve school, such as painting, carpentry, clearing a ball field, leading a Girl Scout/Boy Scout troop, or developing after school activities. Participating in any type of educational mentoring or tutoring, or working at the BCC Tutoring Center are also examples of efforts that would qualify. Cecilia Babyatsky Community Service Award
Provides an annual award to a deserving student who is to be identified and credentials established by the EOF staff and the students themselves. For more information, please contact the EOF Officefor details.
R. Neil Ender Memorial Scholarship
This fund provides an annual one-year scholarship for a full-time continuing Mathematics student with a 3.5 or higher GPA.
