Tutoring Center

Room: L-125

Tel: 201-447-7489

The Tutoring Center offers:

One-On-One Appointments

The CLAC offers current BCC students free one-on-one tutoring in most subjects offered at the college. Students may visit the Center in room L-125 to schedule a 50 minute appointment with one of our many Peer or Professional tutors. Students are permitted to receive up to two appointments for each registered subject (maximum six appointments total) per week.

Drop In Assistance

Students are able to book one "drop in" appointment for each registered class per week. These sessions are scheduled less than half an hour before the start of the appointment. Drop-in appointments do not count toward the two appointments per subject per week limit for one-on-one appointments.

Study Groups

The CLAC offers weekly study groups for a variety of subjects. If you would like to request a study group for your class please contact Staysha Taylor, CLAC Secretary in room L-125. Please note: at least three students must sign up for a study group before it can be created. For a list of current study groups please visit our Study Groups Page.

Workshops

The CLAC offers a variety of workshops throughout the year facilitated by both tutors and BCC Faculty. The various topics covered are advertised throughout the semester.

In-Class Tutoring

In-Class Tutoring is another avenue of support provided by the CLAC. Upon faculty request and available resources, a tutor is assigned to attend a selected course on a weekly basis.

The goal of In-Class Tutoring is to:

  1. Increase and individualize the level of interaction of students within the classroom by assisting the faculty member and responding to student questions and concerns.
  2. Improve the rate of retention by reaching out to students that are in need of extra help, but lack the self-confidence to seek assistance outside of the classroom.

Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a learning enhancement program. SI is designed to assist students in reviewing and learning course material through participation in peer-facilitated study sessions. It is a systematic and disciplined approach for processing the subject material assigned by the professor.

Through this program an SI leader is assigned to a subject. This is a student who has demonstrated proficiency in the subject and undergoes SI training. The SI leader attends the class to keep up with the subject content being presented and to model effective student practices and attitudes. The SI leader schedules and conducts three to five group meetings a week at times convenient to members of the class. During these sessions, the SI leader uses interactive learning strategies to encourage involvement, comprehension, and synthesis of subject content. In addition, the SI leader incorporates demonstrations of effective study techniques.

Online Tutoring

The CLAC provides web-based tutoring through SMARTHINKING. Their service supplements the CLAC’s existing academic support services by offering real-time online tutoring with “e-instructors” and homework help for core courses and skills 24 hours a day, seven days a week. SMARTHINKING’s “e-instructors” are experienced, credentialed, trained and ready to assist students as soon as they sign on with their assigned username and password (given by the Learning Assistance Center).

SMARTHINKING has online tutorial support for: Writing, Reading, Mathematics, Science, Business, English for Speakers of Other Languages, Spanish, Nursing and Allied Health and Computers and Technology. You may submit an online application to get a SMARTHINKING account. You may also fill out an application in person by visiting the Learning Assistance Center in room L-125. For further information about SMARTHINKING, please visit their website, at Smarthinking.com.
