On February 3, Bergen Community College second-year volleyball player Julianne Vahalla, of Bloomfield, was recognized for the Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) Woman of the Year Award. Vahalla received this prestigious distinction at the annual “New Jersey Celebrates the National Association for Girls & Women in Sports Day,” held at Seton Hall University.

The Woman of the Year Award honors one female athlete, who is in good academic standing, from every high school, two-year and four-year college in the state.

Vahalla was a member of Bergen’s Women’s Volleyball team, which captured the GSAC and Region XIX Championships, during the Fall 2006 and 2007 seasons. She received All-Region honors and was named Most Valuable Player of the Region XIX Tournament the past two years. Vahalla was also the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Player of the Week during the Fall 2006 season and was co-captain of the 2007 team.
