ALP Program Information

How am I placed in an ALP level?
Before registering for the first time, international students and non-native speakers of English must take the L.O.E.P. placement test. These test results are used to place new students in the ALP program or English Composition classes. If you are placed in the ALP program, you must complete all courses in the program before you take other courses.

To take the L.O.E.P.test, you must contact the Office of Testing Services, Room S-127. For information about testing call 201-447-7202 or 201-447-7203.

Where do I go get information about International student admission?
All information can be found on the International Student Admission web page. 

Do I need to fill out an application for BCC?
Yes. You need to fill out an application as a non-degree seeking student which can be obtain by downloading an application or by contacting the Office of Enrollment Services. Within a week you will be contacted by mail with information about the L.O.E.P.placement test. After you get your test results, you will be able to register for your ALP classes.

Do ALP Courses count for college credit?
All courses offered by ALP award "non-degree" credits. This means that ALP credits do not count in the total number of credits required for graduation. In most cases, these credits do not transfer to other colleges.

How do ALP courses affect a student's GPA?
ALP courses are averaged into a student's cumulative grade point average. Good grades in ALP courses can help a student can get off to a good start in college.

What is a full-time schedule?
Full-time students have 15 hours of class each week: Grammar, Reading, Writing and Speech classes.

May I study part-time?
Part-time students may take 3, 6, or 9 hours of courses. Part-time students take Grammar and Speech at a new level first, then Reading and Writing.

Does the program have day and evening classes?
Yes. Day classes are scheduled from 8:00 a.m..
Evening classes are scheduled from 6:00 to 10:20 p.m.

What are Exit Tests?
There are Exit Tests at the end of the following courses: Level II Reading, Level II Writing, Level III Reading, Level III Writing, and Speech III. Students who take Level II and Level III Reading and Writing Courses must pass an Exit Test to move to the next level in the skill area. (Example: Students must pass the Level II Writing Exam before they can take Level III Writing.) If students do not pass the exit test, they must repeat the course.

Students must pass the ALP Level III Speech test to take SPE-111, Speech Communication. This is a required course for all BCC students.

Can I take ALP courses on-line?
The American Language Program now offers online classes. You can study BCC's Level III program online at any time of day.Grammar, Reading, Writing and Speech are all available. Classes are held on the Internet. You usually come to the college to take tests.
To take these courses, you should be comfortable using a computer and be self-motivated.
