Departmental Goals for 2007-2008

Faculty Interaction and Collaboration

ˇ   Have at least one joint meeting each semester of full-time and part-time faculty.

ˇ   Continue effort to develop a plan for more collaboration among faculty regarding the teaching process.

ˇ   Continue effort to develop a plan for more collaboration among faculty regarding our own research in philosophy and in religion (e.g., monthly meetings where we can discuss our work).

ˇ   Continue effort to develop a plan for more collaboration between the PHR Department and other departments/programs (e.g., interdisciplinary courses, seminars, discussions on topics of mutual interest).

Student Learning and Development

ˇ   Meet with PHR majors and attempt to increase their involvement in Logos (the BCC Philosophy and Religion Club) and in other activities of the department. The plan for the upcoming year is to send out an informational letter to all PHR majors by the end of 2007FA; update our file of email addresses for all majors; communicate regularly through email to the majors; set up a party/meeting by the end of 2007FA for early in 2008SP; try to interest competent majors in participating in Logos and in serving as tutors for various PHR courses.

ˇ   Continue to apply the plan developed in AY05-06 and AY06-07 for cultivating and using more systematically student tutors in philosophy and religion. In AY07-08, we will work to effect and increasingly close correlation between the needs of students and the tutorial services we provide to them. We will also make more systematic our efforts to inform students of tutorial opportunities in philosophy and religion and to encourage them to use our tutors more regularly.

ˇ   Continue to encourage participation by (both full- and part-time) faculty in Logos meetings. We have made good progress on this in AY05-06 and in AY06-07, and we are aiming at even more progress in AY07-08.

ˇ   As in AY05-06 and AY06-07, consider the bestowing of a departmental award for the best graduate(s) in philosophy or religion.

ˇ   In the spring of 2006, members of the department created and designed an online Philosophy & Religion Forum. Our goal for AY07-08 is to review the operations of the Forum thus far and to make changes that will increase the Forum's effectiveness as a lively venue for student and faculty discussion of topics in philosophy and religion. Our aim is to increase intellectually stimulating and meaningful communication that will foster cohesion of the student body and support students in their intellectual pursuits.

Course and Curriculum Development
and Assessment

ˇ   Develop at least one additional online course (PHR-102, PHR-103) and at least one additional partially online (hybrid) course. Offer at least one of the newly-developed online courses in 2007FA, and offer at least one of the newly-developed hybrid courses in 208SP.

ˇ   Continue and complete other course-development projects (develop Topics in Ethics and Ethics & Technology; revise description for PHR-104 Topics in Philosophy).

ˇ   Continue the process of reviewing and updating on a regular basis PHR departmental course syllabi.
