Bergen Community College's Center for Collegiate Deaf Education (CCDE) serves students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing enrolled at the college.

• About CCDE:

The Center for Collegiate Deaf Education is the northern regional center for college students who are deaf or hard of hearing.  The Center was established by means of the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education. The center provides comprehensive support services as well as personal enrichment opportunities. CCDE works with Bergen in creating an environment where students can be successful. The Center supports students in their commitment to Higher Education. The Special Needs Grant Program originated with the 1896 Higher Education Services for Visually Impaired, Auditory Impaired and Learning Disabled Students Act. The Act established a system of regional centers to provide support services for special needs students. The Annual state appropriation for this grant is $1.1 million. Currently, there are eight regional centers located throughout the state that provide direct assistance to college students who are deaf or hard of hearing, learning disabled, or visually impaired.

 

As a regional center, the CCDE, also provides training and technical assistance for faculty and staff at other postsecondary institutions to improve access and enhance educational opportunities for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The center is funded primarily by The Special Needs Grant Program administered by the Commission on Higher Education and funds are supplemented by Bergen Community College.
