GED Program and Courses
The Ciarco Learning Center offers THREE (3) courses leading to the General Educational Development (GED) Diploma. Each succeeding course is designed to build upon skills learned in the preceding class. Class enrollment is limited to permit maximum participation by students and to provide immediate attention to student needs. The tuition for each course varies depending upon the number of hours of instruction for the course and includes the cost of books for the course. Please refer to each course description for the tuition for that course. Prior to class assignment, all students must register for an introductory course in which students are evaluated in reading and language. Please note: A nonrefundable $40.00 registration fee is charged for the evaluation.
SCHEDULE OF CLASSES. The meeting times for these course offerings of the GED Program do vary. The Information and Registration Desk on the first floor of the Center will have the most up-to-date information on the courses and when they are scheduled to meet.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
BASIC SKILLS ENHANCEMENT (AL 501). This 120-hour course is designed to provide a review of the basic reading skills, reading in the content areas, review and instruction in writing skills, and review and instruction in basic math skills. In addition, all students will be exposed to instruction in study skills. This course is designed to improve students’ reading, writing, and math skills to a level of functional preparedness to advance to the Academic Skills course. This course is also designed to provide students with 15 hours of computer-assisted lessons and formats to improve individual reading, writing, and math skills. Tuition: $425.00.
ACADEMIC SKILLS (AL 511). This 60-hour course is designed for students whose goal is to enter the GED course and who are in need of immediate assistance reviewing the areas of reading, writing, and math, and who are in need of practicing test-taking techniques. All students will be assessed in reading, math, and language before placement in this course. This course will also offer 12 hours of computer assisted instruction. Enrollment is limited to provide immediate and individualized attention to students. Tuition: $225.00. Pre-requisite: Students enrolling in this course must have completed and passed Basic Skills Enhancement, or must have tested for entry at this level. Note: Satisfactory completion of Academic Skills is the pre-requisite to enroll in the GED course.
GED (AL 531). This 80-hour course is designed for students who want to achieve their High School Diploma and need a review of the GED test subjects (writing, social studies, science, literature, math, and essay writing), or who need assistance in test taking strategies. All students will be assessed in reading, math, and language before placement in this course. This course also provides students with 15 hours of computer-assisted instruction. Course enrollment is limited to provide immediate and individualized attention to students. Tuition: $300.00. Pre-Requisite: Students enrolling in this course must have successfully completed the Academic Skills course, or must have tested for entry at this level.
REFRESHER COURSES FOR THE GED
The Ciarco Learning Center offers courses intended for students who are in need of refresher courses in a specific academic area in preparation for taking the GED test. The academic areas are: reading, writing, and mathematics.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE REFRESHER COURSES
READING (AL 505). This 40-hour course is designed to assist students to improve their reading comprehension by developing existing basic reading skills through vocabulary, expansion of reasoning, and instruction in writing skills. All students will be assessed in reading before placement in this class. Course enrollment is limited to provide immediate and individualized attention to students. Tuition: $150.00.
WRITING ENHANCEMENT (AL 506). This 45-hour course is designed to assist students to improve their writing skills by learning and practicing principles and techniques of English composition to achieve effective written communication skills. Students will become familiar with the different kinds of composition writing such as narrative, descriptive, and persuasive, as well as certain matters of organization such as chronological, spatial, classification, and others. This knowledge will enable students to produce the varieties of writing necessary for personal and business matters. Course enrollment is limited to provide immediate and individualized attention to students. Tuition: $170.00.
MATHEMATICS 1 (AL 507). This 45-hour course is designed to teach students basic mathematical skills and to prepare them for successive intermediate and advanced levels of instruction. All students will be assessed in math before placement in this class. This course also provides students with 10 hours of computer-assisted instruction. Course enrollment is limited to provide immediate and individualized attention to students. Tuition: $170.00.
MATHEMATICS 2 (AL508). This 60-hour course is designed for students with existing basic math skills who need revision and remedial work with fractions, decimals, and percentages. All students will be assessed in math before placement in this class. This course also provides students with 12 hours of computer-assisted instruction. Course enrollment is limited to provide immediate and individualized attention to students. Tuition: $225.00. Pre-Requisite: Students enrolling in this course must have completed and passed Mathematics 1 or must have tested for entry at this level.
MATHEMATICS 3 (AL 509). This 60-hour course is designed for students who need a review and remedial work in the areas of basic algebra. All students will be assessed in math before placement in this class. This course also provides students with 12 hours of computer-assisted instruction. Class enrollment is limited to provide immediate and individual attention to students. Tuition: $225.00. Pre-Requisite: Students enrolling in this course must have completed and passed Mathematics 2 or must have tested for entry at this level.
