Robotic Fun

Join us as we set out for a week of exploring and building robots. Younger students will use the Robotix building system, design robots from their own imagination, and enter them into our robot Olympics, battle-bot competition, and tractor pull. Learn to program simple commands and make your robot do tricks with Robotix hand-held computers. Explore and program cool new robots including Robosapien V2, Roboreptile, and more. Plus explore a wide range of challenging builds including the 5’ tall Commander robot and Robo-Dog. All students will build and take home a Robotix robot in this program!
Older students will work in groups to use Legos and an RCX programmable brick to build a robotic arm, Alpha Rex, Tribot, and other creations. Using a computer and infrared transmitter, students will program their robots to meet various challenges given to them throughout the week. Bring along your enthusiasm and your imagination! Discover the excitement of science and make a variety of toys designed to illustrate science concepts that make learning fun! All of the projects can be taken home as they are made throughout the week. Make a working telescope as you learn about optics and light. Construct an electro-magnet and a working electric motor. Build an adjustable, ball-launching catapult that changes the trajectory of a flinging projectile. Making a working model of Hero of Alexandria’s, fountain or a vortex tornado in a bottle. Make ultra-violet bead bracelets, a working compass, submarine divers, hovercrafts and more. Projects will vary by age level and instruction will be taught in more depth for older students.

Lego Star Wars and Motorized Machines

Lego enthusiasts have fun building your favorite adventure from a Star Wars galaxy that is far, far, away and learn a wide range of science concepts. Projects will depend on availability from the Lego headquarters, but will probably include most of these models and more: Imperial Star Destroyer, Naboo N-1 Star Fighter with Vulture Droid, Jedi Star Fighter With Hyper Drive Booster Ring, Sand Crawler, X-Wing Fighter, Tie Interceptor, Jedi Star Fighter and Vulture Droid, General Grevious Star Fighter, X-wing Fighter, Jabba’s Sail Barge, and more. Students will also build a wide assortment of motorized Lego Machines and create their own projects that illustrate science concepts. Students will follow a machine curriculum developed by the Lawrence Hall of Science. All students will take home a Lego Star Wars project. Students will build select models.

Discover the science of flight and rocketry as you build and launch scale model rockets, planes, and other flying gadgets. All students take home a rocket, Sling Wing glider, and a solar car! Construct bridges, towers, and other super structures designed to illustrate engineering principles. All students will bring home flying models and structures. Instruction tailored to age groups.

Have you ever wondered how they make those incredible rides you see at the amusement park? Now you an discover them for yourself as you work with a class of other enthusiasts to design and build a working model amusement park. This course is sure to bring out the engineer in you! We will build a wide range of model amusement park models using the K’NEX construction system. Projects will include: a motorized swing, Double Ferris Wheel, Renegade Run Roller Coaster, Serpent spiral Roller Coaster, Big Ball Factory, Giant Ferris Wheel, Hometown Carnival. Musical Carousel, Boom Ride, and many, many more! All students will take home a motorized K’NEX model as part of the program!

Chemical Magic Make & Take

In this program you will have a terrific time learning chemistry in a fun and hands-on atmosphere. All students will make a variety of toys that are designed to teach science concepts. Projects include a submarine diver game, Flubber, Silly Putty, our own version of Floam, and much more. Make your own bomb bags, light inside a bottle, a home made lava tube, a “Mushroom Monster,” and even a working model of Hero of Alexandria’s Fountain. Learning concepts include atoms and bonding, acids and bases, polymer chemistry, reactions, density, and more. All students will take home a chemical recipe booklet and a mini-chemistry kit.

CE 925 Acrylic Expression

Traditional brush combinations and the pallet knife will be introduced using the approach of various artists such as Van Gogh. Students will learn to create depth, contrast and movement. Paint blending to establish shade, light and shadow as well as a variety of perspectives will be examined. Ages 7 - 10.

CE 926 Watercolor Madness

This course will explore various techniques such as layering color, washing, bleeding and salting. Sponge and cloth will be introduced to stress texture. Mixed mediums of oil pastels and chalk with watercolors as well as stencil and stamping patterns will give students the opportunity for individual expression. Ages 7 - 10.

Do you like to read? Love to write? Sharpen your pencils and hone your creative abilities this summer as you take your creating writing talents to the next level! Whether you’re a beginner or a veteran story spinner or poet, students in this class will use imagination and personal voice to pen unique poems, short stories. Try your hand writing scripts and drama, all while improving grammar and mechanics. Take home a folio of your work to share and build upon. Ages 7 - 10.
