CERTIFICATES FOR COMPUTER TRAINING

A Certificate of Completion from the Division of Continuing Education is given to each student who completes the requirements of a Certificate Program. Any course may be taken individually if the prerequisite is met.

Certificates are issued for all computer courses running 12 hours or more. Certificates are not issued for classes of six hours or less.

                                  WEB DESIGN CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

To earn the Web Design Certificate, you must satisfactorily complete the following courses:

CC362             Creating Your Own Web Page           6 hours               $105

CC455             PhotoShop for the Web                      21 hrs                 $285

CC 362   Creating Your Own Web Page              6 hours           $105

Design and create your own simple Web page, with graphics and hypertext links, using two methods:  (1) Using simple Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) tags and (2) Using an online WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) editor. Learn what elements comprise an effective Web page, and how to upload a page onto the World Wide Web.

Prerequisite:  Intro to the PC & Windows and Internet for Beginners, or equivalent experience.

CC 541   XHTML/CSS                                            21 hours              $285

Students new to the web use Extensible Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to create web page content. Learn the various XHTML tags and their uses as well as standard CSS syntax and its implementation. The course introduces concepts essential for creating standards-compliant web pages including page layout, design techniques, multiple columns and liquid layouts. Work with image based content.

Prerequisite:  Intro to the PC &Windows and Creating Your Own Web Page or equivalent experience.

CC 451   Dreamweaver                                            21 hours         $285

In this introductory course using Dreamweaver, learn to create, maintain and edit a multi-page web site. Format XHTML; create hyperlinks; implement image maps, rollovers and navigation bars; work with tables and layers; format and implement Cascading Style Sheets (CSS); create forms, implement JavaScript behaviors such as pop-up menus. Prerequisite:  Intro to the PC &Windows and Creating Your Own Web Page or equivalent experience.

CC 455   PhotoShop for Web                                  21 hours         $285

Create interactive graphics for the Web using Adobe PhotoShop. Format, repair and enhance photographs for the web. Learn to create: custom logos, effective banner advertisements, images for roll-over effects, and web page design templates using slicing. Design effective interface buttons. Build special web page effects. Prerequisite:  Intro to the PC &Windows.

CC 441   Flash                                                           21 hours         $285

This introduction to Flash enables you to build multimedia and interactive animation content for the Web. Topics include: drawing tools, basic animation techniques, working with sound files, introduction to ActionScripting, techniques for streaming and optimizing Flash content, and publishing Flash content. Prerequisite:  Intro to the PC &Windows and Creating Your Own Web Page or equivalent experience.

                             DESKTOP PUBLISHING CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

This Desktop Publishing Certificate Program covers the key applications needed to work in Desktop Publishing, Graphic Design, or Prepress Production. Each application has a unique function, from InDesign for page layout, to Photoshop for manipulation of images, to Illustrator for creating logos and illustrations. Knowledge of these programs are needed in order to take work from concept to print using todayfs technology.

 

To receive the Desktop Publishing Certificate, the following three courses are required:

CC465             Illustrator CS3                                    18 hours          $260

CC456             Photoshop for Print CS3                     18 hours          $260

CC485             InDesign CS3                                     18 hours          $260

 

Courses may be taken individually. A Certificate of Completion is given upon successful completion of each course. Prerequisite:  Basic computer skills and knowledge of MS Windows or Mac OS9.

 

CC 465   Illustrator   (6 sessions)                  18 hours                     $260

Learn to use this digital illustration program to create vector artwork for print. Topics include: basic drawing tools, creating and manipulating objects, brushes, patterns and gradients, creating transformations, working with color, creating masks, text and exporting graphics.

CC 456   PhotoShop for Print         (6 sessions)      18 hours         $260

Learn to use this powerful image editing and painting program to create and manipulate photographs for print. Topics include: painting and text tools, layers, copying between images, changing dimensions and resolutions, layer effects, image adjustments, color correcting, filters, duotones, creating a picture package and preparing files for print.

 

Although the class uses PCs, Adobe PhotoShop is consistent cross-platform. If you use a Mac, you may attend this class without a problem.

CC 485   InDesign     (6 sessions)                  18 hours                     $260

Adobe InDesign is a page layout/publishing program. Learn to design and create documents for printing, from business cards and newsletters, to single page advertisements and flyers, to complex multi-page color publications. Work with text from within the application and from other sources and programs. Learn to use InDesignfs precise typographical control, long document tools, and color controls. Images and vector drawings that students create in class will be inserted and manipulated in InDesign files. Work will be prepared for printing or output.

ADVANCED COMPUTER GRAPHICS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

The following three courses are required to earn the Advanced Computer Graphics Certificate. The Adobe Creative Suite 3 is used in class.

Any course may be taken individually. A Certificate of Completion is given upon successful completion of each course.

 

CC 543   Illustrator: Advanced Techniques                       12 hours         $210

Take Illustrator to the next level. Topics include: advanced pen tool and path options, compound paths and clipping masks, and pathfinder. Work with Live Paint and Live Trace. Work with filters and live effects including 3D effects. Use envelope warping and the warp tool. Create gradient meshes and blends. Enhance your text capabilities with style sheets and open type. Create templates.

Prerequisite: CC465 Illustrator, or equivalent user experience.

CC 542   PhotoShop: Advanced Techniques                       21 hours         $305

Enhance your basic PhotoShop skills. This course covers advanced techniques for creating, manipulating, processing, retouching and outputting images for print and the web. Topics covered are selection tools, layers, masks and channels, brushes and brush modes, filters and new features in Adobe PhotoShop CS3. Emphasis is on design and composition in conjunction with expanded technical skills. Frequent critiques of the work in process help students create more effective pages.  Prerequisite:  PhotoShop for Print (CC456) or PhotoShop for the Web (CC455), or equivalent user experience.

CC 544   InDesign: Advanced Techniques                         12 hours         $210

Beyond the basics of InDesign is a world of features to enable you to create pages that really work. Topics for the advanced class include: precise guide placement, creating libraries and snippets, working with Bridge, anchoring objects on a page, mastering master pages, and linking and updating external text files. Create and apply object styles, style sheets, nested styles and bullet lists. Place and manipulate layered comps from PhotoShop in InDesign and use quick apply. Create templates.

Prerequisite: InDesign (CC485), or equivalent user experience

                      MICROSOFT IN THE WORKPLACE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

To earn this certificate and be job market ready, you need to complete Parts I, II and III.

Each part is 60 hours of training time and is 3 weeks long. Part I is an Introductory Level course, Part II is Intermediate and Part III is Advanced.

Students who complete the course are competent in using MS Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. Resume preparation and using the Internet for job search is included.

The only prerequisite is the ability to type 20 words per minute accurately. The Keyboarding Fundamentals course, which is scheduled just before Microsoft in the Workplace, is useful to students at all skill levels to improve speed and accuracy.

Part of the success of this certificate program is that it was designed for adults who have not been in the workplace recently or have never learned computer skills. Everyone in the class is in the same boat, preparing for a new or better job.

Learn the basics of the computer applications required for most jobs. This three-week course introduces the beginning student to the Personal Computer, the Windows operating system and the basics of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Topics include:  creating, editing, formatting, saving and printing documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Prerequisite:  Ability to type 20 words per minute accurately.

CC 412   MS in the Workplace, Part II   (12 sessions)       60 Hours      $990
This three-week course enables each student to develop marketable skills. It emphasizes the hands-on approach to Intermediate Word and Excel topics and introduces Access (database), e-mail, and the Web. Using Word, students create tables and columns, headers and footers, and do a basic mail merge. Using Excel database features, students make pivot tables; and they create an Access database including tables, forms, reports and queries.
Prerequisite:  MS in the Workplace, Part I.
