New Pathways to Teaching Curriculum

Bergen Community College, New Jersey City University and participating NJ Community Colleges are offering an alternate route to teacher certification, which is an approved program of the New Jersey Department of Education.

This program is for candidates who possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited four year college or university
  • GPA of 2.75 or higher (No exceptions)
  • Passing PRAXIS II score
  • Introduction to Teaching 24 Hour Pre-service Completion Certificate
  • Certificate of Eligibility (CE)

The NPTNJ program is divided into two stages: Stage I and Stage II. Candidates must first enroll in Stage I, which begins in January 2011, April and June 2011. Stage I students have classes two nights a week for 6 weeks from 6pm to 10pm. In addition to 6 weeks of Stage I coursework, Stage I students must also complete 15 hours of classroom observations in public or private schools of their choice, located in New Jersey.

To enroll in Bergen Community College’s Stage I candidates must possess the following:

  • 3 Official, sealed college or university transcript(s)
  • Copy of passing PRAXIS II score
  • Certificate of Eligibility (CE)
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75 (NO EXCEPTIONS) recorded on an official transcript from a 4 yr. college or university

If you possess the items listed above, bring them to the Technology Building, Room 115 in December 2011 to obtain an application for January Stage I of New Pathways.  Please keep in mind that Stage I is also offered in April/June 2011.  Enrollment is contingent upon meeting ALL of the eligibility requirements listed above.

Stage II begins every September and ends every June. Classes meet one evening per week from 6pm to 10pm.

To enroll in Stage II, candidates must successfully complete Stage I, with a minimum grade of B, and have a contract of employment as a full or part time provisional teacher for the school year.

People seeking to teach Elementary or Middle School must take an additional 45 hours of Literacy and 45hours of Math Instruction as mandated by the New Jersey Department of Education for all holders of Elementary and Elementary with subject matter specialization CE's. The 90 hours of Literacy and 90 of Math will be offered as online courses with partial face-to-face, in- class instruction. See below for Tuition Information regarding course fees.
