Bergen Baseball 2009 Spring Recap

A strong sophomore group led the Bulldogs to an 11-14 record in for the 2009 spring campaign. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs failed to repeat last season’s playoff appearance, as they came within one strike of qualifying. The Bulldogs still had a successful season playing competitively against worthy opponents. Second baseman Jose Padilla had an outstanding season, leading the Bulldogs with a .494 batting average (5th in the nation) and a .646 on base percentage (2nd in the nation). Shortstop Mike Cassese led the team with 27 RBI and had a .370 batting average with 16 stolen bases. Cassese was awarded the Sportmanship award by Coach Jorge Hernandez for his leadership and clutch hitting throughout the year. Right fielder Steve Caracena had 17 RBI and two homeruns; his presence will be missed in the heart of the lineup next year. Lefty starting pitcher Gerard Baratta was the ace of the staff and had the most wins for the Bulldogs, compiling a 5-3 record. These sophomores were part of a combined 26-20 record in there two years at Bergen CC.

Other notable freshmen and transfers were first basemen Luis Buron, who had a .373 batting average, 23 RBI, 6 2B, 2 HR, and 14 SBs; designated hitter Mike Ciramello (Bloomfield High School) also had a terrific year at the plate with a .375 batting average; and third basemen Eric Gullander (Paramus High School) batted an impressive .386. Outfielders Jayson Luzzi and Liam Penberthy both batted over .300 for the bulldogs and contributed well to the offense. The catching duties were shared by transfer Sean Sullivan (Wallington High School) and Freshman Chris Tacoma (Bergenfield High School).

The Bulldogs also had wonderful performances by freshman pitchers Richard Lazaro, Brad Brovero, Adolfo Rodriguez, Jeremy Liebeck, Mike DiGuilio, Ryan Staub, Danae Berry, Ciramello, and Antonio Rivera. They all will be competing for a spot in the rotation for 2010 baseball season. Although Head Coach Jorge Hernandez will miss his second year player’s leadership and contribution, he is looking forward to having quality returning players and talented freshmen coming to the program in the Fall 2009 season.
