Bergen Community College Emergency Management Plan Protocol for Influenza Pandemic

In the event that an influenza pandemic is declared in the continental United States, the following emergency procedure will be activated by Bergen Community College:

1.   The standing committee of key personnel will be called for a meeting. Members: Vice President of Administrative Services, Students, Faculty, Academic Vice President, Executive Vice President, Director of Public Safety, Director of Buildings and Grounds, Nurse, Liaison to the Cafeteria.

  1. The meeting will be to discuss the seriousness of the alert and recommendations from the federal, state, county, and local governments.

2.   Teams will interact with county and local offices to make sure that the health of all students and members of the community present on campus is checked.

  1. Director of Public Safety will contact and work with the Bergen County Office of Emergency Management and the Paramus Office of Emergency Management.
  2. The Nurse will contact state, county, or local professional health workers to set up any needed assistance and obtain recommendations from the governing bodies.
  3. The Food Services liaison will contact food services and advise them that restrictions may be placed on their dispensing of food.
  4. Director of Buildings and Grounds will prepare to shut down functions which may spread the influenza, i.e. drinking foundations, etc. (Should drinking fountains be turned off, bottled water will be distributed throughout the College).
  5. Vice President of Administrative Services will assure that Financial Operations will continue.
  6. Vice President of Administrative Affairs will assure that the least interruption to classes is achieved.

3.   A weekly formal internal assessment meeting will be held to assist the College in making any necessary changes in policy.

  1. Individual personnel will maintain a daily assessment on the pandemic conditions surrounding the college, state, county, and local areas.
  2. Should conditions dictate, emergency meetings can be called by anyone.
  3. All members will maintain constant surveillance on information and procedures from Homeland Security, county and local governments.
