How do online courses work?
Online courses bring together the flexibility of learning from wherever an Internet connected computer is located and the standards of a course taught in an academic semester. Students can login to their courses any hour of the day and any day of the week, so they are not bound by a rigid class schedule of Monday and Wednesday from 1pm - 3pm.
In return for this flexibility, students must take responsibility for their learning by using time management skills, keeping up with the readings and assignments, and by logging in to the course management system (WebCT) on a regular basis to get class information and to communicate with fellow class members and the professor.
WebCT is an easy to use interface. If you can surf the web, use a word processor, communicate by email and work with email attachments you already have the basic skills needed to succeed in an online course. For those who are interested in a combination of in-person and online, partially online (hybrid) courses combine half the in-class time of a regular course with half of the time using WebCT. These courses are just now being developed. For more information please see the partially online course webpage.
