Frequently Asked Questions

Please find answers to some commonly asked questions to address the workarounds and issues with WebCT CE6. If you have any follow-up with these work around contact us at cit@bergen.edu

Assessments

1. Student unable to take/submit an Assessment
Assessments only function correctly when Pop-up Blockers are turned off. Students using lab machines need to check to see if pop-up-blockers have been enabled by the student who used the machine last.

Assignment DropBox

1. Unexpected System Error when students access Assignments
In CE4 Assignments did not have to have a due date. Any Assignment in CE6 MUST have a due date, otherwise students will receive an unexpected system error when they try to access any of your assignments.

2. Drop Box does not display all submissions
In some course sections, by clicking the All Tab and then the status title when looking at submissions the number of revealed submissions will change. Do not assume that students have not submitted their assignment until you have “played around” with this feature.

3. Instructor can’t see Student submissions
In some course sections, a student submits an assignment that cannot be seen by the professor.

4. Students who submit assignments with Office 2007 have an extension (docx, xlsx, etc.) that WebCT does not yet recognize when you download the file (it treats it like a .zip file). Just rename the file with the proper extension (.docx or .xlsx) and the file will open normally in your Office 2003 program.

Discussion Board

1. MyWebCT and Navigation Bar always shows New messages
Workaround with Student View – WebCT considers your Student View (demo student) as a part of your profile. Going to your student view and selecting all messages as read will correct your “New” discussion board pushpin display on the MyWebCT page.

2. Discussion Board – where are my new posts?
Entering the Discussion Board Forum by clicking “New” brings up all the new messages at once and deletes all references to new posts. Please enter your Discussion Board through the underlined discussion topic. Click the “Expand All” button to see where your new posts are hidden.

File Manager

1. Can not view files attached to Email or discussion messages
Files and folder names should consist of valid characters in CE 6. Having an incorrect file name may prevent you from being able to post or access files in your course.  Do not include any illegal characters like spaces or special characters like:   + - = . ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) + { } \ < > ? : ; " ' - = . `   in your file name. Name files and folders containing letters (a to z), numbers (0 to 9) and underscore (_).  For example syllabus2007.html or syllabus_2007.html

2. Can not create files with same names
File and folder names in the Content Manager and File Manager are not case sensitive. This means that lowercase and uppercase letters in file names and folders are not recognized as unique. For example, if you create a file named syllabus2007.html and another file named Syllabus2007.html in the same folder, these two files are recognized as the same file, causing a naming conflict. Use lowercase or uppercase consistently so you can avoid these errors.

3. Can not Edit File in WebCT
If you are using MS Word to create a web page, it adds MS and Word specific html tags which make editing of these files difficult in the HTML Creator program in WebCT. Save MS Word documents as Filtered web pages that can be edited in WebCT using the HTML Creator program.

Grade Book

1. Grade Book and Un-enrolled students
Students who appear all in red are un-enrolled, but will appear in your Grade Book. To hide them, click on the Grade Book options button and select hide un-enrolled student data.

Group Manager

1. Groups and listings
The Group manager is designed to show only up to 5 students per group. Additional students (if enrolled) are in the group, but will not be displayed in the list.

2. Copying course content with Group Sign Up Sheet from one course to another
Group Manager sign up list located on the Course Content Home page blocks course content copying.

Online Course Backup

1.  Limit of one Online Backup per course – but NOT one file
You can only hold one online course backup. Once you convert the backup to a file, that file will serve as your backup file. You can create a second online backup by deleting the existing online backup (remember you still have the file separately).

Search Feature

1.  Search Feature Error
Using the Search tool results in a search error. This is a known issue and we are communicating with Blackboard about a future fix release. We will update this space when we have more information.
