Join us as we set out for a week of exploring and building robots. Younger students will use the Robotix building system, design robots from their own imagination, and enter them into our robot olympics, battle-bot competition, and tractor pull. Learn to program simple commands and make your robot do tricks with Robotix hand-held computers. Explore and program cool new robots including Robosapien V2, Roboreptile, and more. Plus, explore a wide range of challenging builds including the 5’ tall Commander robot and Robo-Dog. All students will build and take home a Robotix robot in this program! Older students will work in groups to use Legos and an RCX programmable brick to build a robotic arm, Alpha Rex, Tribot, and other creations. Using a computer and infrared transmitter, students will program their robots to meet various challenges given to them throughout the week. Bring along your enthusiasm and your imagination! Become a super science sleuth! Learn about forensics, crime scene investigation, and crime lab chemistry as you perform experiments designed to show you just how those tricky cases are solved. Search for evidence, gather clues, and discover how science can help solve a mystery! Dust for and classify fingerprints, analyze handwriting, test for blood type and DNA using “simulated” blood, and use “Glow Blood” to see where humans can’t see. Examine hair fibers, practice chemistry to identify mystery substances, and more. All super sleuths bring home a CSI forensic science kit. Instruction tailored to age groups. Discover the science of flight and rocketry as you build and launch scale model rockets, planes, and other flying gadgets. All students take home a rocket, Sling Wing glider, and a solar car! Construct bridges, towers, and other super structures designed to illustrate engineering principles. All students will bring home flying models and structures. Instruction tailored to age groups. Lego enthusiasts, have fun building your favorite adventure from a Star Wars galaxy that is far, far, away and learn a wide range of science concepts. Projects will depend on availability from the Lego headquarters, but will probably include most of these models and more: Imperial Star Destroyer, Naboo N-1 Star Fighter with Vulture Droid, Jedi Star Fighter With Hyper Drive Booster Ring, Sand Crawler, X-Wing Fighter, Tie Interceptor, Jedi Star Fighter and Vulture Droid, General Grevious Star Fighter, X-wing Fighter, Jabba’s Sail Barge, and more. Students will also build a wide assortment of motorized Lego Machines and create their own projects that illustrate science concepts. Students will follow a machine curriculum developed by the Lawrence Hall of Science. All students will take home a Lego Star Wars project. Students will build select models. In this program, you will have a terrific time learning chemistry in a fun and hands-on atmosphere. All students will make a variety of toys that are designed to teach science concepts. Projects include a submarine diver game, Flubber, Silly Putty, our own version of Floam, and much more. Make your own bomb bags, light inside a bottle, a home made lava tube, a “Mushroom Monster,” and even a working model of Hero of Alexandria’s Fountain. Learning concepts include atoms and bonding, acids and bases, polymer chemistry, reactions, density, and more. All students will take home a chemical recipe booklet and a mini-chemistry kit. In this class, we’ll learn how to paint using acrylics and watercolors. Learn how to manipulate paint, the technique of color mixing, how to apply paint, how to build up a painting from start to finish. Discover how to paint from photos and how to paint what you see! Ages 7-10.

This class will explore various techniques such as layering color, washing, bleeding and salting. Sponge and cloth will be introduced to stress texture. Mixed mediums of oilpastels and chalk with watercolors as well as stencil and stamping patterns will give students the opportunity for individual expression.

Traditional bush combinations and the pallet knife will be introduced using the approach of various artists such as Van Gogh. Students will learn to create depth, contrast and movement. Paint blending to establish shade, light and shadow as well as a variety of perspectives will be examined.
About Our Instructors
Mary Lou Cook is an enthusiastic, certified elementary education teacher with 17 years of teaching experience. Mary Lou has been the recipient of grants from the Greater Paramus Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation in order to promote art education. Her popular classes are also part of Bergen’s 4 Young Learners fall and spring offerings for children.
Kathrine Grappone-Krysa holds a B.A in English and a MAT in Secondary Education from Fordham University. She teaches eighth-grade English and reading workshop at Waldwick Middle School. Katherine has taught for seven years, and has experience at both the middle and high school level. She has also taught several summer enrichment programs in NYC. In addition to teaching, she is a teacher consultant for the National Writer's Project based out of Rutgers.
Sandy Kim holds her BA in Early and Middle Childhood Education from Montclair State University. She is motivated and enthusiastic with a passionate commitment to students’ educational development. Sandy is skilled in creating enriching and innovative activities that address the diverse interests and needs of students. She has experience implementing lessons utilizing several different curriculum series, and has successfully created and taught lessons incorporating cooperative learning techniques, as well as Character Education.
Kimanne Smith holds her MFA from William Paterson University. She is an art teacher at Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, and is also an adjunct art professor at William Paterson University. Kimanne has been an illustrator for children's books and magazines, and has a portrait displayed at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in DC.
Super Science Programs for Kids, LLC, is owned and operated by
Dan Weissman, sixth grade science teacher from the Hampton Township School District. Mr. Weissman is a national winner of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Math Teaching. All 4 Young Learners Summer in Motion Super Science classes are taught by certified teachers with the assistance of a teacher aide in a completely hands-on style, and are designed to be both fun and educational.
