EOF Summer Program

WHAT IS IT?

The Summer Program entails intensive Reading, Writing and Math for five to six weeks supplemented with tutoring and counseling. all sessions are mandatory as they are crucial to your success in the program.

Process

Every student who is accepted to Bergen Community College must take the New Jersey College Basic Skills Test, or the CELT(Comprehensive English Language Test) if they do not speak english. Students who take the CELT are placed in the American Language Program(ESL), at the level at which they understand English. Students who take the Basic Skills test are placed in English and Math classes also based upon the score which they received.

In the Summer Program you are placed in classes based upon your level of Reading, Writing and Computation, as determined by this test. At the end of the summer you are tested again. If your score is high enough, you will be placed into a higher level of Math and/or English class in he Fall. This program gives you the chance to take the test for a second time to improve your score. this could save you a semester of English and Math classes. It is, therefore, very important to apply yourself during the summer, and do your best.

Reading Program

This will improve your comprehension of what you read. You will do class work and homework to give you a lot of practice in understanding what you read. It will also improve your vocabulary.

Writing Program

This will help you to better express yourself, write essays or class reports at a later date, and will better prepare you for any writing assignments.

Math Program

The results of the New Jersey College Basic Skills Test will determine whether you take Basic Math(computation) or algebra. Your instructor will help you to improve your skills in whichever level you are placed.

Counseling /Workshops

Two days per week you will meet in a group with your counselor. During these sessions you will discuss topics related to Student Life, e.g. Study Skills, Time Management, Career Planning, etc. These sessions will also help to clarify issues related to your life at Bergen, give you confidence and prepare you for the Fall semester.
