Biography: I have been a diplomatic historian for quite some time. My greatest interest has been my studies on the Vietnam War. It just has so many layers and so much to analyze that it challenges me, and I excel when I am challenged.
What made you decide to become a faculty/staff member?: Bergen Community College is a top-notch organization that gives teachers the opportunity to enjoy the academic freedom necessary in order to reach students in a way that is unique and refreshing. I feel that this organization lets me be the best teacher I can be, and you can’t beat that.
How do you personally define success in the learning outcomes of your students?: I want my students to know that we study history to better explain the present. I am undertaking a revolutionary approach to teaching history: Students can identify the big moments that changed them as a people and help answer the questions, “Who am I?” and, “Why am I the way I am?” Through the lessons of history, I encourage my students to look at themselves and the people around them instead of focusing on dates and events on a timeline. I love when people suddenly see the value of history. History is not just events in the past; it is today, it is now, it is them.
What have you learned from your students?: My students humble me quite a bit. I, myself, had to combine my studying and part-time work and I thought I was doing something Herculean. However, many of my students combine, full-time college enrollment, full- time employment and, in some cases, full-time parenting. And they excel in all three endeavors. Their determinations to make their tomorrow better than their today deserve my utmost respect.
