Teaching with WebCT
WebCT is the web-based course management tool at Bergen Community College. We utilize Campus Edition 6.2 for online courses, partially online (hybrid) courses, teleweb courses and for web-enhanced courses. If you plan to offer an online or partially online course for the first time, you will need to get permission from your Department Head and Dean to take The Online Professor Program (TOPP) Level I training. If you would like to web-enhance your course with WebCT, we encourage you to get in touch with the web-enhanced team for training and one-on-one coaching.
Faculty interested in using WebCT should fill out a course shell request form. Once the course is initialized, you will get an e-mail with details about how to log-in. To report any problem with using WebCT please contact any one of us at CIT or send an email to cit@bergen.edu. If this is after business hours and is technical in nature, please feel free to call the newly established 24/7 toll-free WebCT Help Desk telephone number: 1-866-479-0733. While this is primarily for student help, after normal hours they will do their best to assist you with an issue. You may also find answers to questions from Ask Dr. C, a searchable database provided by the WebCT support group.
In addition to creating your WebCT course from scratch you may use publisher-created digital e-packs. This digital content can be easily modified to match your course structure and goals. You may search the digital content repository by discipline, title, author, publisher, or key features.
You may give timed online quizzes/exams or proctored exams to online students. In case you decide to give proctored exams to your students, you will need to provide them with specific guidelines at the beginning of the semester. We recommend that faculty look at many different ways to assess student learning that can complement or replace the traditional approach to testing. Please ask us about alternatives that may be of interest to you.
At the end of a semester a professor may deny all students access to a WebCT course. Once a student drops an online course, a professor may deny an individual student access to the course. Denying a student access keeps their records intact, while deleting a student erases their records in WebCT. If students must make up an incomplete, professors can then allow an individual student access to the online course while completing their work. If you need assistance with allowing access to students fill in a student access request form for incompletes in an online course . For additional help with using WebCT you may email us at cit@bergen.edu.
