Ask A Librarian FAQ
What kinds of questions may I ask?
• Brief factual questions • The definition of a term • Which database should I use for research on ....? • What is the address of ...?
Who will read my question?
- One of the Reference Librarians in the Sidney Silverman Library.
How will you respond?
- By e-mail or telephone, if you provide a number.
How soon will I hear from you?
- Within 24-48 hours (unless it is a weekend or holiday) we will answer your question or give you a progress report. If you need immediate reference assistance, please come to the Reference Desk or call 201-447-7436 when the library is open.
Are there services you will not provide ?
- We can't help with problems related to your Internet Service Provider such as AOL. We do not do research for you, but we will guide you in your research.
What if it's 1:00am and I have a question?
- Link to Q&ANJ.org.
- QandANJ.org is designed to provide fast answers to your questions, using information found on the Internet and in proprietary databases funded by libraries. In most cases, QandANJ.org Librarians will provide an answer online in 15 minutes or less! If your question involves lengthy research, we'll get you started and/or provide a referral for you or your question.
- Since this is a cooperative state service, users will most likely not be connected with a librarian at their own library. When New Jersey librarians are not available, staffing is also provided by out-of-state librarians as part of the QuestionPoint 24/7 staffing cooperative.
