In recognition of the fact that Bergen Community College serves a diverse student body, the Library offers services and assistive technology for students with special needs.
For additional information visit the Office of Specialized Services, room S-153.
Adaptive Technology
The Library has 3 workstations on the main floor in the Adaptive Technology Room, to the left of the Service Desk (with wheelchair accommodating tables) equipped with the same assistive technology found in the Office of Specialized Services Adaptive Technology Lab.
The library has two closed circuit television magnifiers, to enlarge the text of any print material, one on the Main Floor and one on the Upper Floor.
The staff at the Service Desk can help you logon to the Adaptive Technology workstations. Training in using this equipment is provided by the Office of Specialized Services. Please contact Hyancinthe Nkurunziza, Room TEC-212 (phone: 201-493-3784).
Closed Captioned Videos
The Library has a collection of closed captioned videos. These can be found by doing a subject search in the Library catalog using the words video recordings for the hearing impaired. Television monitors in the Library’s Media Viewing Rooms are closed captioned capable, and many of the videos can be borrowed from the Library.
American Sign Language (ASL)
Books, DVDs, and videos about ASL can be found in the Library. These materials provide support for BCC students, faculty, and staff who are learning ASL, or who are interested in discovering ASL, the fourth most used language in the United States.
For additional information about Deafness and ASL, please visit the Center for Collegiate Deaf Education, CCDE, room S-131.
Disability Resources
The Library has a number of periodicals that may be of interest, including Careers and the Disabled, Harvard Mental Health Letter, and Journal of Learning Disabilities. You can search for these and other magazines and journals in the Library Catalog.
The Library also has books on learning strategies, learning disabilities, Deaf culture, and books by and about persons who have overcome physical and other challenges. Check the Library Catalog, or ask a Reference Librarian for assistance.
