Free Interdisciplinary Seminar Series in Women’s Studies begins on Thursday, October 20

Bergen Community College is hosting – free and open to the public – the Interdisciplinary Seminar Series in Women’s Studies, featuring lectures and moderated seminars by prominent scholars during the fall 2005 and spring 2006 semesters. The first seminar in the series, History of the Women’s Movement in America with Rutgers University guest lecturer Dr. Beryl E. Satter, will take place on Thursday, October 20, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., followed by seminar discussion from 4:30 p.m. to approximately 6:00 p.m., in Room C-313, Pitkin Education Center, Bergen Community College, 400 Paramus Road, Paramus.

Dr. Satter is an Associate Professor of History at Rutgers University and renowned historian of women’s cultural issues. In her critically acclaimed book “Each Mind a Kingdom: American Women, Sexual Purity, and the New Thought Movement,” Dr. Satter provocatively examines society during the New Thought Movement, an enormously popular late nineteenth-century spiritual movement led largely by and for women.

For the suggested reading lists for this session, please see the Interdisciplinary Seminar Series Web site at http://www.bergen.edu/issws, or contact the Project Coordinator, Associate Professor Maria Makowiecka, of the Bergen Community College English Department by e-mail at mmakowiecka@bergen.edu, or by telephone at 201-447-9281.
