Eating Etiquette

Interviews may take place at a restaurant or over a meal in the company cafeteria. This type of interview generally requires particular etiquette. Some tips for you to follow are:

  • Look over the menu quickly and decide what you want to order, but follow the host's lead. This will give you an idea of what is appropriate to order. Do not start to eat before your host.
  • When eating food, if you are having rolls, break off and butter a small piece at a time.
  • Cut your meat or meal one piece at a time instead of all at once.
  • When sharing dips or sauces, place some on your plate, do not dip your food.
  • Do not use your fingers to eat french fries, however, it is okay for eating crispy bacon.
  • It is impolite to share a dessert.
  • It is not okay to reach across the table for an item.
  • If you are drinking coffee or ice tea, do not leave your spoon in the glass or cup. Likewise, if you are having tea, remove the tea bag from your cup.
  • When asked for salt or pepper, pass both of them together.
  • When speaking, put your silverware on your plate in the "rest position", not on the table. The rest position is similar to forming an upside down "V" ( / \ ) on the bottom of your plate. When you are finished eating, place your silverware on the right side of the plate at the 5 o'clock position.
  • If you leave the table temporarily, place your napkin on your seat.
  • Avoid discussing personal information like religion, politics or any other controversial topics.
  • Do not offer to pay for your meal.

Each interview will be different. Your relationship with the interviewer, the type of restaurant, and the formality of the interview will determine the etiquette you need to display. If you remember to be professional, courteous and well-mannered, you will look like a good candidate.
