Service Learning and the Information Technology Discipline

In the Service Learning program students share or apply skills they are developing in the classroom with a broader community. Service Learning projects in the Information Technology discipline students have included: teaching computer skills to elementary school students, development of the Information Technology discipline web site, and individual faculty web sites (see Collins, Feigenbaum and McGovern for example). The program is open to other departments as well.

All students who participate thoroughly enjoy their experience. Oftentimes, work for the Service Learning Program can be incorporated into the student’s course work in the form of a final project. Students also have come up with original ideas for their contributions.
