The New Jersey Writing Alliance (NJWA) provides opportunities for interested constituencies to improve student writing in our state by building bridges between secondary and college educators through networking, professional exchange, and advocacy.

The 10th NJWA conference will focus on the practical, pedagogical, and institutional issues that face us as we help students make the transition from writing in high school to writing in college. Professional development certificates for presenters will be available. We welcome your proposals.

Formats may include 20 - 35 minute presentations and 75 minute workshops/panels. The conference format is dialogue intensive—we hope to have a large number of members sharing ideas and practices. We may place related shorter presentations together to form presentation blocks.

Topics are suggested by, but not limited to, the following questions:

Finding one's voice and learning multiple voices

  • Empowering students who feel they don't have a voice
  • Incorporating other/expert voices in one's writing

Understanding and engaging multiple audiences

  • Inspiring students to be versatile about audience
  • Developing a sense of audience

Models for team-based learning

  • Challenges and opportunities of team-based learning
  • Using peer feedback

Integrating multiple literacies

  • Technology in multiple literacies
  • Validating different forms of literacy
  • Multi-modal writing
  • Hybrid and online courses
  • Bridging voices from email/Facebook/etc. to academic writing

Bridging high school and college

  • HS students taking college-credit classes (other than AP)
  • College - high school partnerships/writing projects/special programs

We are especially interested in panels or workshops by inter-institutional presenters, especially teams that represent both high school and college faculty addressing a specific topic. Interactive presentations are preferred.

Please include the following in your proposal:

  • Abstract of 250 words maximum
  • A 2-3-sentence informative description for the conference program
  • Name, institution, position, phone number, e-mail & school address for each presenter
  • For groups: indicate contact person
  • Type of session: 75-minute workshop, 20-minute or 35-minute presentation (NOTE: presentations may be in panels that will open up to discussion)
  • Specific audio-visual and technical requests

Proposals must be submitted by December 7. Notification of acceptance by January 12, 2010.
Questions may be directed to Patricia Bartinique of Essex County College at Bartinique@essex.edu.
