FACULTY SENATE MINUTES

April 26, 2005

 

Dr. George Cronk, Chair of the Senate, called the meeting to order at 3:55 p.m.

 

             I.         REVIEW OF MINUTES

Minutes of February 15, 2005 (Revised) and March 15, 2005 were accepted by a unanimous vote.

 

          II.         CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT:

A.              Dr. Cronk announced that, after five years as Chair of the Senate, he will not seek re-election. The Senate offered a hearty round of applause for him.

B.              Dr. Cronk reported that Officers of the Senate met with Vice Presidents Laughlin and Acting Vice President Tomko on the afternoon of April 25 (The President was unable to be there.) The two items that were discussed were:

1.   2005-2006 Tuesday Meeting Schedule. A copy will be sent via email soon.

2.   BCC Learning Outcomes Assessment Plan. This will require more discussion, possibly with Department Heads and others.

 

       III.      COMMITTEE REPORTS:

A.     Shared Governance: Dr. Alan Kaufman reported that this committee was formed by the Senate Officers; the committee is consulting the following to arrive at a definition of shared governance: articles written on shared governance, the Officers’ statement, the BCC Constitution, and other colleges. The committee plans to meet over the summer and make a draft, which they will bring to the Senate for discussion.

B.     General Education Committee: Dr. George Cronk commented on the attached “Report to Faculty Senate – including proposal to add ANT-100 to the GE course list.”

            A motion was made and seconded to close debate: PASSED: 44 - 0 – 1.

            Vote on proposal to add ANT-100 Introduction to Anthropology to the GE course list:

                        PASSED: 48 – 0 – 0.

 

        IV.      OLD BUSINESS: Academic Calendars

Fall 2006: A motion was made to:

1.            Begin Fall 2006 Semester on Tuesday, September 5, 2006

2.            Wednesday, November 2, 2006, will be a regular Wednesday

3.      Fall 2006 Semester ends Thursday, December 21, 2006

                             A motion to amend was made to:

                             Have Wednesday, November 22, 2006, as part of the Thanksgiving holiday

                                      FAILED: 9 – 37 – 4

                             Vote on main motion:

                                      PASSED: 42 – 2 – 5 (Becomes SR-H-2004/2005)

            Spring 2007 (Alternate):

                             PASSED: 35 – 9 – 4 (Becomes SR-I-2004/2005)

            A motion was made and seconded to reconsider:

                             FAILED: 6 – 23 – 8

            Summer 2007:

                             PASSED: 47 – 0 – 0 (Becomes SR-J-2004/2005)
