FACULTY SENATE MINUTES

March 23, 2004

Dr. George Cronk, Chair of the Senate, called the meeting to order at 3:55 p.m.

I.                   REVIEW OF MINUTES: The February 17, 2004, Faculty Senate Minutes were approved without objection.

II.                CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT: At the March 16 meeting of the Senate Officers with Dr. Winn, Executive VP Laughlin, and Academic VP Levinson the following were discussed:

A.     Calendar

1.      There are problems with the fall schedules in the years of 2004, 2005, and 2006, which are yet to be worked out.

2.      On April 13 Department meetings are scheduled (re-scheduled from April 6, the first day of Passover). April 13 is the last day of Passover, so that creates a problem for a few of the faculty. Dr. Cronk referred to an e-mail which he recently sent:

a)       The elections must be held on April 13.

b)       If, in any given department or sub-departmental discipline group, there are objections to the April 13 date based upon religious grounds, then that department or discipline group must arrange to hold a special election for the purpose of electing its departmental or disciplinary senators on another date and time, to be determined by the department or discipline group.

c)       Any such special election must be conducted at such time (e.g., on Tuesday April 20, 2:40-3:35 PM) that will allow the results thereof to be known before the upcoming General Faculty Conference, which will take place on Tuesday, April 27, and at which senators at large will be elected.

d)       If some members of the Nominations and Elections Committee cannot be available for the April 13 elections, then the Chair of said Committee shall designate other Committee members and/or, if necessary, non-Committee members to administer said elections.

Since we are a secular institution, the Executive Committee and the Administration are looking toward eliminating some of the religious holidays that, in particular, play havoc with the spring and fall calendars.

B.     Middle States:  Dr. Peter Dlugos asked Senators to consider working on Middle States Study Groups and to encourage members of their constituencies to do so as well. He distributed a form on which Senators and others could sign up for Self-Study work.

III.             COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Robyn Monaco, a student government council member, spoke on behalf of students with disabilities. As an advocate for this group of students, she urged Senators to be aware of special needs students.
