FACULTY SENATE MINUTES
November 12, 2002
Room S134
Chairperson Dr. George Cronk called the meeting to order
at 3:50 p.m.
I. REVIEW OF MINUTES: The October 15,
2002, Faculty Senate Minutes were approved without objection.
II. CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT:
A. Dr. Cronk reported on the October 15 Senate Resolutions, which President
Winn returned to the Senate Secretary.
1. SR 88-F 2001/2002 Deletion of Remedial Algebra Requirement for Travel and
Tourism, A.A.S. was approved by the President.
2. SR-A-2002/2003: "Urge the President to stop busing staff on Friday,
which would save the College money." President Winn gave a two-paragraph
statement saying that, because of a contract for this service, no money would
be saved as a result of a cessation of Friday busing. Nonetheless, the Administration
has agreed to discontinue the Friday busing for the remainder of the Fall
Semester, unless heavy snow necessitates reinstituting the busing on Fridays.
3. SR-B-2002/2003: "Increase general coverage of parking areas by Public
Safety, especially during the hours of 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 10:30
p.m." Dr. Winn replied that according to Director of Public Safety, Fred
Sahlberg, exterior patrols of parking areas have already been stepped up,
including officers assigned to walk parking areas during these times. A search
process is currently underway for three public safety officers. Additionally,
increased linkages have been made with the Paramus Police Department and Bergen
County Police on traffic and security-related matters.

and VP Laughlin, October 29, 2002. Topics of discussion were:

B. Parking - Professor Richard Comerford
A motion was made that the Vice President for Administration and the Director
of Public Safety report in person to the Senate at least once each semester
regarding the following:
1. to provide statistical reports on on-campus accidents, car thefts, tickets
issued, assaults, and uncivil behavior
2. to provide a baseline report of the number of new faculty/staff parking
permits issued
3. to provide a progress report by the County police assigned to the campus
4. to hold a question and answer session.
PASSED: 38 - 0 - 5
A motion was made that the BCC Office of Planning give a detailed report of
current lighting, its efficiency, and a plan of improving lighting consistent
with the new TEC Building.
PASSED: 34 - 0 - 4
A motion was made to:
1. Have a "teaching faculty only" parking lot because, whereas most
non-teaching faculty park for extended hours in one parking lot, most teaching
faculty change from lot to lot, parking in each lot only for the duration
of their classes. Such constant changing of parking spots not only creates
inconvenient traffic flow for others who park in a shared lot, but makes it
impossible at times to find parking spots that are meant for long-term parking.
2. Endorse a study to install traffic control safety mechanisms, with special
consideration for the East Hall Child Development Center. An amendment to the
above motion was made to split the motion into two separate motions. Therefore,
the two motions were voted on separately.Motion was made to have a "teaching
faculty only" parking lot because, whereas most non-teaching faculty
park for extended hours in one parking lot, most teaching faculty change from
lot to lot, parking in each lot only for the duration of their classes. Such
constant changing of parking spots not only creates inconvenient traffic flow
for others who park in a shared lot, but makes it impossible at times to find
parking spots that are meant for long-term parking.
1. FAILED: 3 - 26 - 6
2. PASSED: 32 - 0 - 5
The meeting was adjourned at 5 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Professor Marjorie Webster
Secretary
