IV. CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT: Dr. George Cronk
A. Because of snow days, the Administration has suggested that the Spring 2003 Withdrawal from Classes date be moved from March 26 to April 2.
A motion was made to this end and the motion:
PASSED: 36 – 1 – 0
B. Meetings of the Officers of the Senate with the Administration were held on January 28, February 11, and March 4, and the following topics were discussed:
1. On January 28, the four Senate Officers, President Winn, Academic VP Levinson, Executive VP Laughlin, VP Nurnberger, Professor Carol Miele, and Professor Richard Comerford met, particularly to discuss the subject of Parking and Campus Security. Subjects discussed were the proposed parking for faculty in the gaited area of the new parking ramp, further campus security by the County and Paramus police, and employed lighting experts.
2. Dr. Winn re-addressed the subject of the goals ranked by the Senate last year. Dr. Cronk will bring this matter back to the Senate’s attention at its April meeting.
3. Outcomes Assessment – Core Competencies: should the Senate actually approve these? Dr. Cronk will ask Dr. Peter Dlugos to send the Senate a resolution on this matter.
4. Late Start Program: After a discussion, the Senate moved: “The Administration should review and study the Late Start Program and report back to the Senate before the Program is offered again on topics such as: Whose responsibility is the Late Start Program? Why did some classes run for fewer minutes than other classes? Which courses should be offered? Is the program functioning for students for which the program was intended? Who are those students? Can the students in the program learn the material presented in only twelve weeks, i.e., in a semester three weeks shorter than the standard semester? Should all but one of the late start classes be taught by adjunct faculty? What is Late Start versus late registration? What classes are eligible for the Late Start Program? What is the rationale and justification for such a shortened-time and accelerated program?“
PASSED: 24 – 2 – 5.
5. Special Tribute to R. Neil Ender: The College is willing to name S134 (the hall where the Senate has met for many years) “The Robert Neil Ender Lecture Hall” and place a plaque near the entrance. Some feel that East Hall should be named Ender Hall. A suggestion was made to put this on the next Senate Agenda, and in the meantime continue to ask for suggestions that would be appropriate for this tribute. Dr. Cronk reported that the Senate Executive Committee and the BCCFA Executive Committee have already solicited proposals from the Faculty on ways in which Professor Ender’s memory might be honored.
V. COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. Good and Welfare: Professor Peter Helff
Two deaths of faculty family members: John Giaimo’s brother and Augie Borghese’s father
B. General Education Committee: Dr. George Cronk
The Committee would like to keep the two TIL courses, IST101, Intro Tech & Info Literacy A, and IST102, Intro Tech & Info Literacy B, in the Catalog for at least one more year. The Senate consensus was to do so.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:10 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Professor Marjorie Webster
Secretary
