Chairperson Dr. George Cronk called the meeting to order at 3:55 p.m.
I. REVIEW OF MINUTES: The Senate approved the November 13, 2001, Faculty Senate minutes as presented without objection.
II. CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT:
A. Dr. Cronk reported that he had not yet received from all the Senators the
form distributed at last month's meeting regarding the college's five-year plan
and objectives. In this document Dr. Winn asks the senators to rank order six
goals and return the form to Dr. Cronk.
B. At their December 4 meeting with the President, Academic Vice President,
and Executive Vice President, the Officers of the Senate presented the concerns
of the Senators regarding the three-year calendar. The Administration is reviewing
the calendar in an effort to place any scheduled days that are different from
the actual day of the week (for example, Thursday schedule on Wednesday) earlier
in the semester rather than at the end of a semester. They will report to the
Senate Officers soon.
C. The Administration informed the Officers about the student evaluations:
1. The evaluations must be used in all classes in one of the two semesters each
year for all tenured faculty and in all classes in both semesters each year
for all non-tenured faculty.
2. Evaluations are to be administered in all ALP, AIMS, and EBS classes, with
the instructor explaining the form beforehand and discussing the questions afterwards
in relation to difficulty in order to obtain feedback.
3. Students should be advised that they can choose to skip any questions that
they do not care to answer.
4. ETS will process the evaluations and issue reports which are presented to
the faculty member.
5. ETS will not return the forms, but in accordance with the faculty contract,
faculty should hold onto the reports for seven years.
Professor Silverberg, who served as chair of the committee (created by President
Winn) that selected the ETS form, offered that the committee recommended using
the narrative form in addition to using the ETS form.
Questions were asked, and Dr. Cronk answered them: (1) Yes, we will have opportunity
to react to the adequacy or inadequacy of the ETS form; (2) Yes, the College
Administration is committed to a quantitative form (without excluding the use
of a supplemental narrative form); and (3) Middle States does not require a
quantitative form; that was a local administrative decision.
III. COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. Good and Welfare. Professor Helff reported that $500 was collected at the
Holiday Get-Together Lunch for the Nick Anagnostakos scholarship fund and that
$250 was collected for the Employee scholarship fund.
