During the Spring 2009 semester I am scheduled to teach five online courses in the Business Department: BUS 207 099WB Principles of Business Management, BUS 103 099WB Business Math, BUS 101 098WB and 099WB Introduction to Business and BNF 102 099WB Personal Finance & Money Management. These courses are similar in content to the on campus courses but differ in that (1) we do not meet on campus, (2) contact with me and with the other students is online and (3) all work is submitted electronically. . The course outlines for each of them can be found by clicking on the course titles above. Students interested in finding out more about these courses should email me at rangiello@bergen.edu. Those interested in general information about BCC's distance education programs can find more information on our distance learning web site.
Online classes allow greatly enriched class discussion and allow completing the course work in a more flexible time frame. Students who take an online course, however, should not misunderstood how rigorous these courses are. Although we do not have any scheduled face-to-face meetings this does not mean the course is less work. Just as with any three credit hour course the student should expect to commit approximately nine hours per week to the course; traditionally this would be three hours in the classroom and six hours outside. Since we have no "real" classroom it is important that you be able to schedule enough time on your own. An online course requires that students have a lot more self-discipline and good time management skills. Of course, students in an online class must have access to a computer and to high speed (cable or DSL) Internet access and be comfortable using both the Internet and word processing. Online courses are reading and writing intensive so students should also be reasonably fluent in English. virtually ew
Although the course outline for the on campus course is still being finalized there are some key copncepts that will be emphasized. Attendance and promptness are critical since there will be some graded activity in virtually every class. Students will be expected to conduct some research and either make an oral presenation or submit a written report, or both, on their research projects. There will defintgely be some graded group work.
If you need more information before registering for any of these courses email me at rangiello@bergen.edu.
I am extremely interested in the sound educational use of instructional technology. I have been heavily involved in Bergen Community College's efforts to enhance and expand student learning by the appropriate use of technology and in assisting faculty to use technology in their teaching and research. I founded BCC's Center for Instructional Technology and, while no longer involved in its day-to-day administration, continue to support it's efforts. I also served as coordinator of the TOPP (The Online Professor Program) training team which provides a structured, formal instructional program to new and experienced online faculty and continue to serve as one of the trainers. For more information about the CIT or TOPP see the CIT web site.
