5.1.1 Unit Exams
A Warning Worth Reading!
Exams in my courses will largely be non-cumulative. (Be  sure to check with your specific instructors for their  policies!) I usually give three exams for each unit, each  focusing upon a different type of question, i.e., objective,  short answer, and essay. Because of the way WebCT  works, I've found that it is more convenient for students to  have a separate exam for each type of question.
These exams will be given online using the WebCT  system, and must be taken by a certain date in the  course after which they will no longer be available.  Usually, you will have several days during which you can  take the exam. However, the exam must be completed  during the specified period.
Exams are “open book.” You can use your text, online  course materials, notes, and other written material.
      • However, cutting and pasting lecture notes or  materials from other sources will be considered  cheating, and you will receive no credit for your  answers. (I use an anti-plagiarism system to  check answers for plagiarism.)
      • Also, you are expected to take the exams by  yourself, that is, by working alone, not with  others. While it may seem that no one can tell if  you decide to work with someone else on an  exam, it actually is fairly obvious to the  instructor. Using IM, chat, or e-mail to  collaborate with others while taking an exam is  considered cheating.
      • You may find, even in on- line courses, that  instructors will require you to take one or more  exams in the College's testing center.
Exams are timed, so to be successful you must be  familiar with the material. You will not have the time to  look up all your answers.
In my courses, there are no make- ups for not taking an  exam during the time it is available, so make sure you  are ready and that you will not be interrupted during the  test period. It is not a good idea to wait until the last  moment to take an exam because you might encounter a  technical problem. (WebCT keeps track of your time  while taking an exam, and will cut you off once time has  expired.)
Before your first exam, we will have a practice test to help  you prepare for the exam and to help you become familiar  with taking tests online.
