Visit to a Historical Site
To find information regarding the site you are going to visit, the following materials in the Library should be useful. If you have any questions, or need more information, please contact me at Professor Joan Cohen, jgcohen@bergen.edu, (201) 447-7984, Room L317, or ask a Librarian at the reference desk.
1. Books - Go to the Library Home Page at www.bergen.edu/library. From the Find Books/Reserves/Media menu you can search as follows:
| Types of Searches | Example |
| Search by Subject | central park |
| Search by Keyword | Washington and revolution |
| Search by Author | last name first name |
| Search by Title | dictionary of American history |
2. Magazine/Newspaper Articles and specific historical resources - Go to the Library Home Page at www.bergen.edu/library and from Find Articles/Electronic Resources, choose a “Frequently Used Database” and search by names, words, phrases and combinations. Be sure to click on Full Text Articles on the search page so that all the information you get is complete. For newspaper articles choose “Newspapers” and then choose The New York Times or The Record. To access this from home, you have to provide the following: user name - your last name; password - your 7 digit student ID number. Problems: call the reference desk at (201) 447-7436.
3. Internet Searching – For this assignment search engines are useful, i.e. www.google.com . Search by name and location. Look at official websites. Example: www.hudsonvalley.org for Sunnyside and Philipsburg; national park service www.nps.gov; central park www.centralpark.com, etc. Remember that while the Internet is an excellent source of information, not all sites found, and information contained in them, are accurate or suitable for classroom research. Look for websites that are from the government (.gov), organizations (.org), and educational (.edu). The site should be dated and current.
4. Citation Structure – For this assignment you are required to use the MLA Format in citing the works you have used (books, magazine/newspaper articles, web sites, interviews, etc. There is a link to all kinds of citation information on the left hand side of the library home page. If you are having any problems with this, please contact the reference desk.
