CHM 100 – Introduction to Chemistry

Experiment # 5 – Physical and Chemical Properties

Revised instructions…

Part A2:  Boiling Point

This is an instructor DEMO.  The distillation apparatus is on a cart.

Read the thermometer and record the boiling point of methyl alcohol.

Part A3:  Solubility

  This is for observation only.

Part A4:  Miscibility

  This is for observation only.

Part B1:  Heating Elements

    b)  This is an instructor DEMO under the fume hood.

Part B3:  Solution Reactions

Instead of using test tubes, use spot plates…

a)     Place 4 drops of sodium carbonate in the upper left well.  Add 1 drop of 6M hydrochloric acid to the sodium carbonate.  Record your observation.

b)    Place 4 drops of sodium sulfate in the upper right well.  Add 1 drop of 6M hydrochloric acid to the sodium sulfate.  Record your observation.

c)     Place 4 drops of sodium nitrate in the bottom left well.  Add 1 drop of 0.1 M potassium iodide to the sodium nitrate.  Record your observation.

d)    Place 4 drops of lead nitrate in the bottom right well.  Add 1 drop of 0.1 M potassium iodide to the lead nitrate.  Record your observation.

e)     Rinse and wash the spot plate, then return it to side counter.

No reaction/no change means there was only a physical change in volume and mass.
