New Jersey Law

     The Sidney Silverman Library at Bergen Community College houses a print collection of New Jersey legal resources that includes
New Jersey Statutes Annotated, the New Jersey Administrative Code, New Jersey case law from 1790, the New Jersey Digest and
New Jersey Practice, as well as the New Jersey Register.  These and many other print sources facilitate the study of New Jersey law.   Please search the Library's catalog for holdings and location of these titles.  
     PLEASE NOTE:  The New Jersey Administrative Code and the New Jersey Register are not available on the Internet. 
 The Sidney Silverman Library has up-to-date print versions of both.  Ask at the Reference Desk.

New Jersey County and Municipal Resources
New Jersey Law Network:  Types and forms of New Jersey municipal government, directory of mayors with addresses, phone and fax numbers. Links to all New Jersey government information. 
New Jersey State Courts Home page - Local Government:  New Jersey municipalities list with Treasury and Federal Code Numbers.  Web sites for municipalities, both official and unofficial.  Local planning officials.  Municipalities can add their web sites to this list. 

Bergen County
Bergen County Courthouse:  History of the civil, criminal, and family divisions of the court, as well as probation and jury information. 
Bergen County:  Government, housing, business, recreation, transportation, labor, human services.

New York State:  The New York Public Library's site includes links to New York Court of Appeals decisions, New York State Senate and Assembly, and other law related sites.  New York City sites are included as well. 
National Center for State Courts:  State, Federal and International court sites.  Links to various available lower court sites within states. 
Legal Information Institute - Cornell University:  Includes State statutes on the Internet arranged by topic such as alcoholic beverages, education, motor vehicles. 


United States Federal Law
United States Supreme Court Decisions 1990 to date:  Full text of decisions from 1990 on which are searchable by topic, keyword or name of parties plus current court calendar and the schedule of oral arguments.  (Current decisions may be available one day after release.)
United States Supreme Court Decisions 1893 to date:  Browsable by year and searchable by citation, case name and keywords.
Supreme Court Historic Decisions:  Selected historic Supreme Court decisions with links to other sites containing Supreme Court decisions. 
Supreme Court of the United States:  The official Supreme Court site is well organized. Full text of opinions (with a link to previous Bench Opinions), the Court calendar and schedule, background information about the Court and Justices, Court Rules, Bar admissions information, case handling guides, and public information, including a visitor's guide.
Congressional Bills - Thomas Legislative Information:  Bills and public laws beginning with 1973-74 (93rd Congress), searchable by bill number, public law number, subject or keyword.  Also Congressional Committee information, historic documents, and the Congressional Record. 
United States Code 
United States Code via Cornell University:  Federal statutes enacted by Congress and signed by the President or passed over his veto   which are organized by topics and searchable by title, section or by keyword. 
Code of Federal Regulations
:  Codification of the general and permanent rules of the Executive Department and agencies of the Federal Government that are first published in the Federal Register.
Federal Register:  Official daily publication of rules, proposed rules, and notices of Federal Agencies and Organizations as well as Executive Orders and other Presidential Documents.  Daily issues available 1994 - date. 
Congressional Record:  Official record of the proceedings and debates of the United States Congress 1994 - date.  It is searchable by year, date range and subject or keyword. 
United States Government Printing Office
:  The GPO prints, binds and distributes the publications of Congress as well as the Executive Departments and agencies of the Federal Government. 
United States Department of Justice
:  Alphabetical index and pathways to all divisions of the Department, legal activities, publications and documents.  
Internal Revenue Service:  Regulations, publications and tax forms. 


Federal Law - Related Sites
Thomas - Legislative Information on the Internet:  Search engine for Federal legislative materials, bill summaries, House and Senate Roll Call votes, Public Laws, Congressional Record, and Committee Reports. 
Federal Judicial Center:  Research on Federal Court's operation, procedure and history as well as educational materials and publications.

American Bar Association Approved Law Schools - National List:  Schools are listed alphabetically, by state and by public or private affiliation. 


Law Libraries
American Association of Law Libraries (AALL):  Directory of law library catalogs, law schools, law firms, law related organizations, connections to law journals and law related listservs. 
LLRX.com:  Online journal for law and library information dealing with technology resources. 
World Wide Web Virtual Law Library:  Part of the WWW Virtual Library from Indiana University's School of Law which is searchable by topic; it provides search tools and links to other comprehensive sites. 


Attorney Directories, Legal Advice and Forms
Martindale Hubbell Law Directory:  Searchable database of lawyers and law firms.   
New Jersey Lawyers' Directory:  Listings statewide, county and practice area. New Jersey attorneys may register with this site. 
Consumers' Guide to Legal Help:  From the ABA, provides information on hiring, using, paying a lawyer.  With state by state listings.
LawHelp.org:  For low and moderate income people who need help with "housing, work, family, bankruptcy, disability, immigration and other topics".
Pro Se Law Center
FindForms.com:  Provides access to free and fee forms for wills, bankruptcy, power of attorney, divorce, etc., plus employment ads, finding an attorney and other links.
Forms Room:  From the 'Lectric Law Library claims to be the largest collection of free forms for business or legal practice.

American Bar Association:  Links members and non-members.  Includes legal assistance, consumer publications, state Bar Associations, etc. 
New Jersey State Bar Association 
National Association of Legal Assistants:  National professional association for paralegals.

Legal Information Institute (Cornell):  Events, court cases, law by jurisdiction or topic. 
Hieros Gamos (HG.org):  Legal research center with directories of lawyers, expert witnesses, court reporters and investigators, student information, employment information.  Very comprehensive.
American Law Sources OnLine (ALSO):  Links to Federal and State laws and uniform laws for the United States, Mexico and Canada.  Clearinghouse site for legal specialties. 
Nolo Press Law Center:  Legal encyclopedia and dictionary plus cases and statutes.  Self help tips include how to write your own will. 
LawGuru.com:  Comprehensive site which includes - "Ask a Lawyer", legal forms, employment ads, faqs, find attorneys, etc.

Court TV Online:  Cases in the news, famous historical cases, wills of famous people, legal documents and contests.
