How much time do I have to spend studying for this class?
Learning a second language is like learning a new skill. You have to review and study on a daily basis due to the amount of new vocabulary and grammar concepts you will be learning,  the assignments you will have to complete, and the quizzes you'll have to take. It also depends on what type of learner you are. There is a formula that should help you. For every credit you are taking, you should devote three hours of study; so if it's a three credit course, you should spend at least nine hours a week studying for this class.  Cramming is not effective and does not work in this subject area. Don't try it!

What do I have to do to successfully complete this course?
In order to successfully complete the course requirements, you must meet the following criteria: review and study regularly, come to class and participate actively and consistently, submit completed assignments on time, and pass all written and oral evaluations.

What happens if I miss a class?
For your benefit, the homework assignments are posted daily in this site. If you miss all or part of a class, it is your responsibility to find out from a classmate or from the homework page- not from me -- what you have missed (notes, assignments, announcements, etc.) so that you are prepared for the next class period. You are expected to complete and to  submit any assigned homework on the due date. The "I wasn't here yesterday" excuse is not valid. Please obtain the telephone numbers of two or three of your classmates if you don't have access to the Internet so that you can find out the assignment for the next class period. (More information)

Attendance:  You are expected to attend every scheduled class meeting in this course on time and for the full class period. I will take roll each time the class meets. Unexcused absences from or lateness for or early departure from class will negatively affect your class participation grade.   "Lottery" quizzes or in-class assignments cannot be made up under any circumstance.

What happens if I arrive late to class on the day of a quiz?
Prompt arrival to class is highly recommended. I prefer to give the quizzes at the beginning of the class period. My quizzes have an oral portion (dictation, True/False, question/answer). If you arrive late and miss the oral portion, those points will be deducted from your grade and you will not be permitted to make up the oral section. If you arrive after your classmates have completed the quiz, you may not take it.

What happens if I miss a quiz?
There are no make-ups but I will drop one (the lowest) quiz grade..

What happens if I don't submit a homework assignment or fail to submit it on time?
You are expected to do all of the required assignments for this course and to meet the deadlines for such assignments. Remember, it is your responsibility to find out from a classmate or form this web-site -- not from me -- what you have missed (notes, assignments, announcements, etc.) so that you are prepared for the next class period. You are expected to complete and to  submit any assigned homework on the due date. You have one day to submit the assignment but you will receive a 10-point penalty. After two days,  late assignments will not be accepted and you will earn a zero.

What can I do if I feel I am not grasping the material or I am falling behind?
There are several options: you may want to find a study buddy or join a small study group to review, do  homework or study together; you may go to the Tutoring Center, request a tutor (free of charge), and schedule an appointment with a tutor;  or you may schedule an appointment with me during office hours. You may also visit the on-line tutorial site ( studyspanish.com). In addition, I have learning tips available and other resources to help you through the learning process.

How will my class participation be measured?
By your preparation and contributions to class activities, by your timely arrival to each class, by your attendance, by your attentiveness, your behavior, and your attitude towards the course. Your oral performance and your preparedness will be assessed regularly during class time. Lack of preparation and regular absences will have a negative effect in your overall classroom performance. See Grading

Do I need to have access to a the internet?
Yes. There will be on-line quizzes, and internet assignments. In addition, the homework assignment is posted daily and sometimes I will e-mail you. If you do not have a computer at home, there are several computer labs on campus available to students, including the computers in the library.

Can I drink or eat in class?
You may bring bottled water or bottled sodas. Do not bring coffee, snacks or food to eat in class. Also refrain from chewing gum.

When and how should I contact my professor?
In the event of unexpected circumstances or emergencies that may cause you to miss a quiz or a test, you may e-mail me or call me.  (See Office Information)

Why should I contact my classmates?
If you are absent from a class, remember that it is your responsibility to find out about homework assignments. Obtain the name of two classmates and their phone numbers to contact them in order to obtain the information.

When should I take Spanish II?
It is best if you take Spanish II right after you complete Spanish I while the material is fresh in your mind. It is not advisable to wait one semester or a year to continue. It is also better if you complete your sequence at Bergen Community College to ensure continuity of content and methodology.

Why should I continue studying Spanish if I don't need the credits?
In today's job market and particularly in this area, being able to communicate in another language is a great asset. However, one year of study is not going to be enough if you want to become proficient. Continue studying and look at it as an investment in your professional future. Explore study abroad opportunities to strengthen your language skills. Take advantage of what is already available to you: Spanish television, radio stations, ethnic restaurants, Spanish-speaking friends, and coworkers.

The next course you should take is Intermediate Spanish I and/or Spanish Coversation.
