An effective introduction will accomplish
the goals of
- getting the audience's attention
- stating the relevance of your topic to the audience
- making the purpose of your speech clear to the audience
- previewing the body of the speech
Even though there are four goals listed,
this doesn't mean that the
introduction should be lengthy. Quite the opposite is true! Your
introduction should accomplish these purposes as efficiently and
quickly as possible, so that you can spend most of your speech
time on the body of the speech.
