Contextualized Learning

Contextualized teaching and learning utilizes strategies to enhance students’ basic and academic skills utilizing examples of real world context that is of interest to the students. In the SIP program English Faculty will utilize science topics as a context for reading and writing instruction in the classroom. A Science Faculty partner will assist in the SIP English classroom and provide the necessary science background for students to understand the science context.

Dr. Dolores Perin of the Community College Research Center at Teachers College has written extensively on the reading and writing skills of academically under prepared college students, and has conducted an intervention study in which literacy skills were contextualized in science topics.
