Prerequisites

In order to enroll in a college-level mathematics course, students must demonstrate proficiency in basic mathematics and elementary algebra.

This prerequisite is achieved by meeting one of the following requirements.

  • Completing the Mathematics Placement Test and not being placed in a developmental mathematics course*
  • Completing all Developmental Mathematics placements with a grade of C or better*
  • Earning a score of 530 or better on the mathematics portion of the SAT exam.
  • Transferring to Bergen Community College a college-level mathematics course
Students who meet at least one of the above requirements may enroll in any of the following college-level mathematics courses:
  • MAT 130 – Contemporary Mathematics
  • MAT 150 – Statistics I
  • MAT 155 – Finite Mathematics
  • MAT 160 – Intermediate Algebra

MAT-130, MAT-150, and MAT-155 are general education courses. These courses may be used to satisfy the mathematics general education requirement. MAT-160 is not a general education course and thus cannot be used to satisfy this degree requirement.

The prerequisites for all other college-level mathematics courses are as follows:

  • MAT-180 Precalculus: College Algebra and Trigonometry
      • Prerequisite - MAT-160 Intermediate Algebra with a grade of C or better or Successful completion of the proficiency test for MAT-160
  • MAT-223 Calculus for Managerial and Social Sciences
      • Prerequisite - MAT-160 Intermediate Algebra with a grade of C or better or Successful completion of the proficiency test for MAT-160
  • MAT-250 Statistics II
      • Prerequisite - MAT-150 Statistics I with a grade of C or better
  • MAT-268 Statistical Methods
      • Prerequisite - MAT-160 Intermediate Algebra with a grade of C or better or Successful completion of the proficiency test for MAT-160
  • MAT-280 Calculus I
      • Prerequisite - MAT-180 Precalculus with a grade of C or better or Successful completion of the proficiency test for MAT-160 and MAT-180
  • MAT-281 Calculus II

      • Prequisite - with a grade of C or better

Students who wish to enroll in a college-level mathematics course but do not have the stated prerequisite must provide the Academic Department Chair with documentation demonstrating that an equivalent prerequisite has been completed with a grade of C or better. The Academic Department Chair, upon reviewing the documentation provided, will determine whether the student has met the stated prerequisite. Courses completed in high school do not meet the stated prerequisite for college-level mathematics courses.
