Scholarships

Below are scholarships available exclusively to students who students who study GED or ESL at Bergen Community College in Hackensack.

The Helen L. Haber Scholarship

This $500 scholarship was established in memory of Helen L. Haber, who taught, tutored and served on the Advisory Board of the Ciarco Learning Center. The scholarship is awarded annually to a qualified woman on the basis of financial need and educational commitment.

Hispanic Institute Scholarship- Hispanic by Birth or Heritage

Hispanic Institute Scholarship will give an annual award of $2,500.00 scholarship to a qualified full-time Bergen Community College student who is Hispanic by birth or heritage and has a GPA or equivalent of a “B” or 3.0 for the previous year in college or high school.

The scholarship is administered by the Bergen Community College Foundation. Since 1984, the Hispanic Institute and Bergen Community College have collaborated to provide adult education program at Bergen's Philip Ciarco Jr. Learning Center in Hackensack. More than 2,500 Hispanic students each year attend classes in English as a Second Language, computers, and office skills.

William F. Coggie Endowed Scholarship Fund

This scholarship, named in memory of longtime Associate Dean of Students and Professor in the Student Services Division, provides an award for a male student who has successfully completed his GED or ESL requirements at the Ciarco Learning Center and has been accepted in a certificate or degree program at Bergen.This application should be accompanied by a typewritten biographical essay (no more than 500 words) that includes the student’s educational goals.

The Carmen Pichardo Scholarship Program-Tuition Assistance for Ciarco Students

The Carmen Pichardo Scholarship is awarded to GED or ESL students of the Ciarco Learning Center. Qualified students pursuing ESL education are eligible for an award of $1600. Qualified students pursuing GED preparation are eligible for an award of $900. The award is applied to tuition and book expenses for a course of study only at the Ciarco Learning Center location of Bergen Community College.

Eligibility Requirements

  • You must be a current, past, or future student of the Ciarco Learning Center in the areas of adult basic skills, GED or English as a Second Language (ESL);*
  • You are 18 years old or over
  • You have demonstrated financial need. You are able to participate in an interview with the scholarship committee.
  • You are willing and able to Pass It On

What Does It Mean to Pass It On?

As a living tribute to the spirit of Carmen Pichardo and her life, recipients of her scholarship are asked to help others in need. This can be done during or after the completion of their coursework.Some ideas for Pass It On are:

  • Babysitting so that someone can go to a class
  • Driving a person back and forth to school
  • Dedicating yourself to a community or church project
  • Raising money for a favorite cause
  • Meeting weekly with an ESL student to tutor English

The Carmen Pichardo Scholarship is intended for those who wish to continue a chain of support and help other people’s educational dreams come true. To obtain an application, please go to the Information and Registration Counter of the Ciarco Learning Center. The deadline for applications is November 15.*A student enrolled in a Department of Labor program is eligible to apply.
