Writing II

ALP WRITING (053) meets three hours each week and is for students who are taking or have taken Grammar II or received a Level II placement on the CELT test.  It is taught at the intermediate level.  The course begins with a strong focus on sentence structure in which we practice writing a variety of simple, compound, and complex sentences.  At the paragraph level, we concentrate on three rhetorical models:  process, narration, and reasons.  In each, we concentrate on the specific structures that would naturally be used.  For example, in process, we tend to use imperative form main clauses.  In narration, we tend to use introductory phrases as transitions, and in reasons, we tend to use the because clause or because of phrase.  Students begin to use the writing process consciously, practicing brainstorming, clustering, outlining, drafting, and editing.
At the end of the term, students earn a grade based on the average of their in-class and out-of-class writing tests.  Students in this course are required to pass the Writing Exit test, and plenty of practice is provided.
