The successful student in this course will be able to:

Identify and summarize the basic problems, principles and methods of logical reasoning

Distinguish inductive from deductive arguments; properly assess the strength of each    

Detect and avoid fallacious reasoning

 

Identify fallacies in ordinary language contexts; write argumentative essays that are free of such fallacies    

Formulate and evaluate informal and formal deductive arguments

 

Determine the validity of informal and formal arguments; construct arguments that instantiate valid argument patterns    
Apply the principles and methods of logical reasoning to the analysis of texts and the problems of everyday life; and Correctly diagram and evaluate the structure of arguments contained in newspaper editorials and essays and articles on current events    

Use language, both in speaking and in writing, with logical rigor and clarity.

 

Write argumentative essays free of ambiguity, vagueness, and fallacious reasoning.Give oral presentations that are well structuredand focused.
